Southwest of Svaneke is one of Denmark's richest power centers from the Iron Age, Sorte Muld(Black Soil). Sorte Muld has been a political, religious and economic hub on the island in the Baltic Sea. New excavations in the area will start in May 2019.
In addition, there are several burial mounds in the area, such as Svendshøj, Bavnehøj and Sønderhøj. The Burial mounds are probably originate from the Bronze Age.
