Iron Age and Later PrehistoryHillfort and Neolithic flint mines in West Sussex The largest hill fort in Sussex, the second largest in England and one of the largest in Britain and Europe overall, covering some 60 acres. The earthworks that form the fortifications were built around the beginning of the Middle Iron-Age possibly around 250 BC but abandoned in the period 50 BC - 50 AD. Of the approximately thirteen flint mining shafts excavated at Cissbury between 1875 and 1878, three shafts exhibited art and marked chalk blocks. Image submitted by southdownsancientsites

Neolithic and Bronze AgeA well-preserved round barrow on which two tall oaks stand. Situated on the island of Bornholm, Denmark. From the small hill on which the burial mound stands there is a wonderful view over the Baltic Sea to the small archipelago of Ertholmene (which is Denmark's most easterly point). Neolithic and Bronze AgeIn a field beside a little stream, just to the north of the village of Couesmes-Vaucé is this menhir, around 2 metres tall. There are a few other pieces of stone nearby which may have broken off it. Image submitted by Lemmy

Neolithic and Bronze AgeA perfect example of a large bell barrow, 23m wide and 1.5m tall. Located on slope of the hill south of Blewbury and visible from a good distance. The site was excavated in the 19th century. In 2006 there was a controversy over a 16ft cross erected there by a local clergyman to mark the spot where St Birinus gave his first sermon in 634AD. This was later moved. Image submitted by firecresthealing

Neolithic and Bronze AgeVeslehagan barrow cemetery is one of the best preserved barrow cemeteries I (Kenneth) visited last summer. Twelve round barrows of varying sizes, constructed of sand, located on a flat forest covered peninsula on the bank of the Vorma. A small footpath leads east from the nearby road towards the cemetery, and the terrain slopes steeply down towards the river in all other directions. Lots more photos on our page. Natural PlacesKnown as the home of "The Red Lady of El Mirón”, this rock shelter lies above Ramales de la Victoria. Discovered in 1903 by Lorenzo Sierra, and been excavated over many seasons by Lawrence Guy Straus and Manuel R. González Morales. In 2010 they found a human burial in an unusual location, found to be of the first significant burial of the lower Magdalenian period found in the Iberian Peninsula. The shelter is in the same valley as the caves of Covalanas, Cullalvera, La Haza, Pondra and Arco (find these via the list of nearby sites on our page). Image submitted by Anne T

Early MedievalTwo ancient cross incised stones on the south side of the building, also two rough, unshaped stones which appear out of place amongst the memorials nearby. St Digain's also has a yew tree reputed to be 4,000 years old. Image submitted by JimmyMeasures

Neolithic and Bronze AgeAn Orkney-Cromarty type chambered cairn with polygonal chamber and a large lintel stone in situ. A narrow spur of stones on the NW side of the main cairn could be the remains of 'horns' that the cairn may have once had. Image submitted by markj99

Roman, Greek and ClassicalRemarkably preserved in a dune, the thermal baths of Hogolo were discovered in 1892; several excavation campaigns were carried out in the twentieth century. The monument dates from the 1st century. Enlarged in the second century, it was transformed into an agricultural dwelling in the third century and then demolished in the fourth century. Iron Age and Later PrehistoryThe striking remains of this fort lie for the most part in a walled plantation on the summit of Rink Hill at a height of 195m (640ft). The earliest work on the site appears to have been an oval fort or settlement measuring some 150m (500ft) by 91m (300ft) within a single rampart, which is now represented only by a ploughed-out fragment lying west of the plantation wall.

Rock ArtIn Baunei, within the Ogliastra region (Sardinia), there exists a unique petroglyph. This carving, etched into a limestone surface, is set into the cliff face overlooking the town, sheltered by an overhanging rock formation. There are no definitive findings regarding its exact age, the most significant excavations were conducted in 2005 by archaeologist M.A. Fadda. The site is currently closed, but a further research campaign, followed by work to secure the area and make it accessible to the public is due to begin soon. Image submitted by ciatology

Iron Age and Later PrehistoryIn the summer of 1864 workmen digging a water reservoir on the highest ground in the town of Novocherkassk cut into a barrow. What they found was a Sarmatian burial almost two thousand years old, and one of the richest ever recovered on the lower Don river. Image submitted by Anne T

Neolithic and Bronze AgeLocated in central Ukraine. Alongside ordinary houses the settlement was laid out with what the excavators call 'mega-structures', better understood as 'assembly houses', set out to a definite plan. Recent survey work has found that Maidanetske was not made up of one site, but made up of several, constructed at different periods. Image submitted by Anne T

Neolithic and Bronze AgeOn Bornholm it is customary to tip your hat and greet this stone ‘godmorgen Hellig Hågen’! The ‘tray’ or ‘altar’ piece at the front seems a later addition (perhaps medieval, but that is not certain) Image submitted by Klingon

Neolithic and Bronze AgeThis so-called stone circle lies overlooking the bluestone outcrop of Carn Meini in Pembrokeshire. It is actually oval or horse-shoe shaped, leading to speculation that it may have influenced the horseshoe shape of the Bluestones at Stonehenge. Image submitted by TheCaptain
