The Markawasi plateau mapped and written about in the 1950's by Peruvian explorer and philosopher, Dr. Daniel Ruzo, is squarely attributed to the field of forbidden archaeology. Legendary for its gigantic anthropomorphic and zoomorphic stones dating back thousands of years before the Great Flood, the plateau sits at an altitude of over 12,000 feet above sea level, reached by a trek on foot or horseback along a steep path from the tiny village of San Pedro, located on the western Andean ridge of Peru. Known to Andean shamans as a place "beyond the veil of time," legends of mysterious anomalous phenomenon are not uncommon to this ethereal landscape. Surrounded by hundreds of sculptures at a towering twenty-five meters high, with fourteen anthropomorphic figures of four different races, "The “Monument to Humanity,” is the most important sculptured work that exists on the earth today!” - Dr. Daniel Ruzo. A Quechua word meaning "one of many," Checta is home to hundreds of pre-Incan carved petroglyphs. This ancient 5,000 years old site once encompassed a large lake and temple complex buried for eons under a landslide high above the valley. In one dreadful moment back in 1925, hundreds of ancient carved stones were revealed when a deadly avalanche stormed down the valley killing 14,000 people. The day we arrived, we were introduced to Doña Consuelo Livia, an 88-year-old great grandmother known as the "Protectress of Checta." She has devoted the past 60 years of her life to the preservation of the site. Consuelo happily greeted us, eager to share her stories.
