Description
Hengistbury Head - my Dorset cousins survey the wild landscape. It was hard to tell where the barrows were, so I was rather disappointed. The guided walk on the following Sunday must have been a great help. Later I found a plan in the museum at Christchurch.

I had a similar experience up here earlier on this year - the barrows were marked on the map but not at all easy to find under the gorse and bracken. And it was raining. There is a booklet you can get from Tourist Information called "Hengistbury Head Archaeology Trail" and it explains what's what at various points around the headland (there are numbered posts to help you). The Iron Age coastline extended well beyond the "Long Groyne" visible on the right of the picture.
