The Silent Pool

The Silent Pool submitted by Andy B on 16th Apr 2005. The Silent Pool, Albury. The pool is formed from a nearby natural spring, and its true name is Sherbourne Pond. Its clear waters and peaceful setting give it an air of tranquility, or 'silence'. More about the legends of the pool here.

Albury Park Mound

Albury Park Mound submitted by Andy B on 17th Apr 2005. This is the most overgrown site we have ever investigated. After much searching we think we've located the lost barrow. The thicket you see indicated here by Eileen is on a raised circular area of ground about 10 metres across. With a bit of imagination you can see the shape of a barrow in the profile of the bushes.

Deerleap Wood

Deerleap Wood submitted by Andy B on 17th Apr 2005. I revisited Deerleap Wood barrow in Spring 2005, fearing what the trees planted in 1997 might have done. Remarkably the trees look identical, so I can only assume the previous lot of trees was cut down and new ones planted. These shouldn't really be planted on one of the most significant barrows in Surrey, should they?

Felday submitted by Andy B on 30th Jun 2005. This hillfort is not easy to discerne, it appears to cover most of the hilltop. I will return in the winter once the undergrowth has died down but in the meantime here's a taster of the wildwood surrounding it.

Mag's Well (Abinger Forest)

Mag's Well (Abinger Forest) submitted by Andy B on 3rd Mar 2010. Hidden in the woods behind Coldharbour is Mag's Well, a healing spring said to ease skin complaints. Being slightly impregnated with sulphate of magnesia, the water has a somewhat sulphurous taste and should not be taken in any significant quantity. The name is probably a corruption of St. Margaret's Well. Copyright Dan Gregory and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Licence.
