Dun Maraig
Date Added: 17th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Fort or Dun
Country: Scotland (Isle of Skye)
Visited: Yes on 13th Apr 2010

Dun Maraig submitted by Creative Commons on 13th Apr 2010. The tidal island of Dun Maraig in Poll na h-Ealaidh has the vague remains of a fort on it. Once it was connected to the shore by a causeway, and it is still possible to walk across to it at very low tide.
Perhaps more interestingly, the small island was won as the star prize in a 1994 German TV game show by a Stefan Schluznus of Bremen. A pretty useless, but fun, sort of prize.

Dun Skudiburgh
Date Added: 17th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Fort or Dun
Country: Scotland (Isle of Skye)
Visited: Yes on 14th Apr 2010

Dun Skudiburgh submitted by Andy B on 14th Apr 2010. Dun is the Gaelic for fort, which was built on a suitable crag or look out. This photo shows what a fantastis spot this was to see any invader coming in from the sea. The dun seemed to have arrived with the Brthonic Celts in about the 7th century BC. They are associated with the Iron Age culture of warrior tribes and petty chieftains. The duns were often smaller than brochs and were not capable of supporting large, tall structures. When does a dun become a broch?

This view is looking up to the site with a double row of boulders marking the approach to the fort.
