Merrivale
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 12th Sep 2007

Merrivale submitted by AngieLake on 12th Sep 2007. To link in with the Captain's recent pics of Merrivale, Langstone Moor, etc, this is the amazing rock formation of Great Staple Tor in close-up, taken from the north west(-ish), [lower pic] and across the rear of the 'portals' [top].
You can see how the Ancients might have revered this natural stone 'doorway': it is still enthralling today. Perhaps they thought that their 'gods' watched them through its portals on Great Staple Tor, and that is why they positioned their monuments around it?

Grange (Co. Limerick)
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Ireland (Republic of) (Co. Limerick)
Visited: Yes on 30th Sep 2007

Grange (Co. Limerick) submitted by AngieLake on 30th Sep 2007. A view along the entrance passage to Grange (also known as Lios) Circle in Limerick, Southern Ireland. At Summer Solstice the sun shines along this passage, into the centre of the circle, which is the 'largest and finest in Ireland'.
You can see the 'V' notch in the stones on the opposite side of the circle, which could have framed the setting sun on Winter Solstice.

Gwernvale

Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 16th Oct 2007

Gwernvale submitted by AngieLake on 16th Oct 2007. A reconstruction of the appearance of Gwernvale from 'The Brecon Beacons National Park' [Countryside Commission Official Guide] by Roger Thomas, Webb & Bower (Michael Joseph), 1987.
What fascinated me was the arrangement of posts at the 'false entrance' in the horned forecourt, as I always get three or four 'rod-openings' [ie: my L-shaped rods open at right-angles to each other] on final approach to the 'entrance' during ritual movement dowses at chambered tombs.
Here, it says the posts are ...

Spinsters' Rock
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 23rd Oct 2007

Spinsters' Rock submitted by AngieLake on 23rd Oct 2007. When a friend and I visited on 8th October we spent most of the afternoon here, and to begin with it was very sunny. I liked the way the underside of the capstone is lit up here.
Two things NOT to do: Don't picnic, and don't feed this pony - he may bite! (see site page for more).

Goonhilly tumuli
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 26th Oct 2007

Goonhilly tumuli submitted by AngieLake on 26th Oct 2007. This is another burial mound near Dry Tree menhir. Indeed, when I was searching for the stone with my dowsing rods, on 22nd May 07, I was led here, so am wondering if the stone (which was re-erected) might possibly have stood on this mound originally?
(The bracken was very vigorous then, and it was difficult to access, but two large stones stand either side of the mound, one slightly obscured in the vegetation!)
Please see plan submitted for this site's position, to the east of Dry Tree me...

Arminghall Henge
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Henge
Country: England (Norfolk)
Visited: Yes on 8th Nov 2007

Arminghall Henge submitted by AngieLake on 8th Nov 2007. This plan caught my eye because of the horseshoe shape of the posts that used to stand in the centre of Arminghall. I wonder if the builders of Stonehenge were influenced by this site?
In 'Circles & Standing Stones' by Evan Hadingham [1978 edition, where this pic was found], he says that the site is carbon-dated to 3400 BC.
