Ham Hill (Somerset)

Ham Hill (Somerset) submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jun 2006. I got permission from the quarry-man to go close enough to take this picture of the strata of the quarry face on Ham Hill. (The one nearest the modern circle). If this transfers to the web page successfully it might be possible to see the layers of stone used to create the Iron Age fort. (At least, that's what it looks like to me!) A similar pic was posted on Porth Island fort near Newquay.

Harolds Stones

Harolds Stones submitted by AngieLake on 26th Jun 2006. Harolds Stones in Trellech with the church tower (hiding behind the tree at upper left of pic) in the background. A lovely, atmospheric site on a beautiful sunny Summer's day (11 June 2006). Note the pronounced cup-marks in the central stone (close-up to follow).

Maen Llwyd (Gwynedd) submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jul 2006. 'Maen-Llwyd', is the name of this standing stone on the OS map I used to explore the Llyn (Lleyn) Peninsula in north Wales. Situated on a private estate, so unable to take a closer look.

Bryn Gwyn Stones submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jul 2006. Bryn Gwyn's taller stone is like the tip of a sword - high, and quite broad, but very slender. Its thinner sides align E-W.

King Stone Round Cairn

King Stone Round Cairn submitted by AngieLake on 4th Jul 2006. The King Stone viewed from near the brow of the hill to its north, and a cairn-like circle of stones that were possibly in the area of the tumulus mentioned in the legend. Unsure if these have always been in this position. The Kings Men are across the road behind the trees, to the far right of this view.

Leech Wells

Leech Wells submitted by AngieLake on 4th Jul 2006. Difficult to photograph from any distance because of the slope of the lane, and the depth of the well from the road. (I'm standing opposite, on the bend of the lane as it goes downhill.) This shows the width and height of the entrance, and the canopy of trees. A manhole cover is in centre foreground. A morning photograph would cast more light into the well itself, but I was here on afternoon of 3 June 06.

Halliggye submitted by AngieLake on 4th Jul 2006. When I visited in May 2006 there was too much mud in the passage to try making an entry. Even with boots on I'd have been in peril of slipping up on my bum! This shows the area's fencing. Would hate to stumble across a hole like this in the dark!

Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr)

Beuno's Well (Clynnog Fawr) submitted by AngieLake on 11th Jul 2006. St Beuno's Well, or Fynnon Beuno, at Clynnog Fawr. This was once very popular with pilgrims and looked very inviting from the road. (Beware when visiting, as this road is lethal - the traffic whizzes past about an inch from your nose; and, fool that I am, I was there at leaving work time! There are no pavements and it's quite narrow, with no verge. I walked along it trying to catch a glimpse of the dolmen, as well as the well!)

Moel Ty Uchaf

Moel Ty Uchaf submitted by AngieLake on 17th Jul 2006. This is the side nearest the ridge upon which Moel ty Uchaf stands, of the pile of stones I was led to whilst dowsing a ritual movement route at the site. At first glance it appeared to resemble a collapsed cairn or tomb. I came from Moel ty Uchaf's circle, down over the slope in a roughly southerly direction, at an angle towards my left slightly but aiming straight towards it (not having seen it before hand). On the way, there were three separate single anticlockwise movements, at equal dista...

Bachwen submitted by AngieLake on 24th Jul 2006. I vowed to visit this site after seeing one of Hamish's earlier pics. I took loads of photos in cloudy conditions, then, just before I was due to leave (about 6.30pm) the sun came out! Cue: a repeat performance and an expensive visit for me, using my non-digital cameras. This picturesque site is now one of my all-time favourite places, and I was very fortunate to have it all to myself for 2 hrs.

Metherall Settlement submitted by AngieLake on 23rd Aug 2006. Shall we see this rare sight more often as global warming takes effect? These ancient hut circles are usually under the water of Fernworthy Reservoir. Find them just below the main car park after a very dry spell (such as summer 2006). 12.08.06

Virtuous Well

Virtuous Well submitted by AngieLake on 4th Sep 2006. The Virtuous Well in bottom right-hand corner, showing the position of Trellech church. The gate to the field is behind me here. The sign reads:"The Virtuous Well. Once known as St Ann's Well and famous for its cures. It was visited by many pilgrims as late as the seventeenth century. It is said to be four separate springs, three containing iron and each curing a different illness. Its niches held offerings and cups. Stone seats gave rest to the weary traveller."
