Boskednan stone circle

Boskednan stone circle submitted by AngieLake on 15th Oct 2004. The portals at Boskednan as they appeared in March 2004, before the huge stone on the left of picture was re-erected. Carn Galva, which now seems to be framed by these stones, is visible on the right horizon. Between the tall standing stone and the rocky outcrop of Carn Galva, can just be seen the pointed stones of the 'destroyed barrow' (as described by Ian McNeil Cooke in his excellent book "Mermaid to Merrymaid - Journey to the Stones").

Boskednan A

Boskednan A submitted by AngieLake on 15th Oct 2004. This eye-catching stone is in what first appears to be a small circle, near the footpath to Boskednan from Men an Tol. According to the OS map (Explorer 102) it is a 'Tumuli', (near "Carn Galver"). It is on the higher ground (its own little ridge - 227m), and seems to point to the right of Carn Galva, on the left of picture, and more towards the knobby outcrop of granite in the right distance. (The only thing possible on the map is "Little Galver", or further north, "Hannibal's Carn"). Either ...

St Neot's Well (St Neot)

St Neot's Well (St Neot) submitted by AngieLake on 19th Oct 2004. This pic shows the rear right of the inside of St Neot Holy Well, with the offerings, and the worn door with its lovely old catch. (I should say that we found this door fastened, and made sure it was securely shut before we left.)" This is what the church guide book has to say: "The Holy Well The holy well is some three hundred yards from the church. It stands near the St Neot river in a level meadow backed by a steep bank planted with trees. One reaches it by turning in beside the Carlyon...

King Doniert's Stone

King Doniert's Stone submitted by AngieLake on 19th Oct 2004. In this picture, the interlaced engraving on the side of the tallest stone can be seen more clearly. Granite is very hard stone to carve, so it must have taken a long time to make those patterns. The inscription about King Doniert is on the shaded side of the shorter stone in the foreground.

St Cleer's Well

St Cleer's Well submitted by AngieLake on 20th Oct 2004. This is a close-up of the monk-like figure in the niche on the front wall of the well-house. I couldn't help noticing the phallic shape of the granite point on the roof, though maybe it was just the angle! Perhaps a relic of more Pagan times.

Altarnun Cross

Altarnun Cross submitted by AngieLake on 21st Oct 2004. A view of the lovely old 'Celtic' cross in St Nonna's churchyard at Altarnun (altar of St Non, or Nonna) near Bodmin Moor. (Also known as 'the cathedral of the moor'). In the church leaflet we read: "By the church gate is to be found a very fine celtic cross. As well as being a thing of beauty it is also a great age, probably dating back to the 6th century, the time of St Nonna herself. For one thousand four hundred years, as this cross has stood, people have worshipped God in the churches b...

Boscawen Un

Boscawen Un submitted by AngieLake on 31st Oct 2004. Boscawen Un (or 'Boscanoon', as the local man called it), was looking lovely in March 2004, with no ferns to mar the view of the stones. This pic was cobbled together from two separate ones, so wouldn't win any prizes. However, it does give an overview of the site, showing the late afternoon shadow cast by the giant gnomon in the (off) centre. A few minutes later, and a few hundred yards between here and the main road, I discovered the scarily spooky Creeg Tol.

Carn Gluze submitted by AngieLake on 31st Oct 2004. Shot of the landward side of Ballowall Barrow (Carn Gluze) taken from the top of the outside 'collar' wall. It shows the depth and narrowness of the gap between the outer and inner cairn. (I have good footage of this area after walking right around the circular 'passage' with my camcorder). The view of the Cornish coast here is spectacular, with Sennen Cove in the distance.

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. The 'Beehive Hut' in Carn Euny's Fogou. The patch of sunshine through a grille (see Jim Champion's excellent arty picture of 1.1.05) is visible far right. This gives some daylight to what would otherwise be quite an eerie place. It is believed to have been the first structure built on this site, and the fogou was created later. Because of this, it is thought that the SE-facing doorway of this chamber once allowed the midwinter rising sun to shine through it an hour or so after dawn, thus ill...

Tolvan submitted by AngieLake on 5th Jun 2005. The view through the hole in the Tolvan Stone at Tolvan Cross near Gweek. The sun shines through this one - orientated to approx WNW - on 9th June every year. This may not mean anything, as it was apparently moved to this site, in 1847, from the field to its east, where it possibly formed the entrance to a burial chamber. See site page for further details.

King Arthur's Hall

King Arthur's Hall submitted by AngieLake on 15th Jul 2005. Blessed by lovely weather, my visit to this strange site was enhanced by the cloud of fluffy white bog cotton dancing in the breeze. This view looks diagonally back towards the entrance gate, with Roughtor behind me in the distance, at 38degs from the largest pointed stone near to the camera. Note the way the two large pointed stones stick up on the 'west' side of the site. The tallest of these aligns at 109degs with Roughtor. It struck me how much the three of them (with a shorter one bet...

St Eval Church Stones submitted by AngieLake on 18th Jul 2005. Another stone in the perimeter wall at St Eval in Cornwall. This one is approximately south of the south main door of the church. There are no less than six Green Men bosses on the ceiling inside the church. It is very atmospheric inside: you can't help but remember those brave young men who fought for our country in WW2.

St Dennis Hill Fort

St Dennis Hill Fort submitted by AngieLake on 19th Jul 2005. The interior of St Dennis Dinas, or Dynas, meaning Hill fort. Today it is the churchyard of St Dennis church. Here the path leads off to a break in the west side of the rugged wall where two old well-worn steps lead into the area. Craig Weatherall, in his book Cornovia, tells us that the line of the inner bank of the fort, which may have been stone-built, is followed by the current churchyard wall. It was the most atmospheric churchyard I'd ever had the pleasure to visit, and was enhanced by...
