Callanish I submitted by AngieLake on 25th Sep 2004. I know you have loads of Callanish, but I do like this pic of the tallest stone in the main Callanish circle.

Penrhos-Feilw
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: Wales (Anglesey)
Visited: Yes on 25th Sep 2004

Penrhos-Feilw submitted by AngieLake on 25th Sep 2004. The two tall stones and their shadows viewed from another angle, showing the proximity of the farm house beside the lane, close to which I'd parked in a small layby. This was taken one gloriously sunny evening in May 2002. The views over Trearddur Bay are stunning, and I would guess that the distant hills must be on the Lleyn Peninsula, on the south side of Caernarfon Bay. This site is actually on Holy Island, but joined to Anglesey (Ynys Mon) by several roads.

St John's Well (Morwenstow)
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 11th Oct 2004

St John's Well (Morwenstow) submitted by AngieLake on 11th Oct 2004. Lovely situation, tucked away in a leafy dell, on the edge of an orchard. Access signposted from lane. Just across the lane from the 'gated' end of the churchyard path at Morwenstow - famous poet-priest, Hawker's - church. (A level path runs through the churchyard, just above the entrance gate to the drive of the Vicarage. There is a plan of the area opposite the main gateway to the church, near the tearooms and carpark.) Approach down overgrown steps fringed by fronds of ferns.

Merrivale Menhir submitted by AngieLake on 12th Oct 2004. Merrivale on the day before the official autumnal equinox last month. This is the tall standing stone that stands near the circle in the SW of the Merrivale complex. The sun had just set, I would say this was approximately 7.30pm.

St Swithin's Well (Launcells) submitted by AngieLake on 13th Oct 2004. St Swithin's Well, which reputedly never runs dry, tucked away close to the lane leading to Launcells Church. It's water, by tradition, was a salve for eye ailments

Trowlesworthy
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Barrow Cemetery
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 14th Oct 2004

Ringmoor Down stone circle submitted by AngieLake on 14th Oct 2004. This stone - looking like an electric iron, poised for use, is almost opposite the other unusual stone in Ernar's Trowlesworthy circle. It does make you think that these were especially chosen for their shapes, and begs the questions, "Why?", and, "Were they in this actual position for a reason?""

Boskednan stone circle
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 15th Oct 2004

Boskednan stone circle submitted by AngieLake on 15th Oct 2004. The portals at Boskednan as they appeared in March 2004, before the huge stone on the left of picture was re-erected. Carn Galva, which now seems to be framed by these stones, is visible on the right horizon. Between the tall standing stone and the rocky outcrop of Carn Galva, can just be seen the pointed stones of the 'destroyed barrow' (as described by Ian McNeil Cooke in his excellent book "Mermaid to Merrymaid - Journey to the Stones").

Boskednan A
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cairn
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 15th Oct 2004

Boskednan A submitted by AngieLake on 15th Oct 2004. This eye-catching stone is in what first appears to be a small circle, near the footpath to Boskednan from Men an Tol. According to the OS map (Explorer 102) it is a 'Tumuli', (near "Carn Galver"). It is on the higher ground (its own little ridge - 227m), and seems to point to the right of Carn Galva, on the left of picture, and more towards the knobby outcrop of granite in the right distance. (The only thing possible on the map is "Little Galver", or further north, "Hannibal's Carn"). Either ...

Visited: Yes on 19th Oct 2004

St Neot's Well (St Neot) submitted by AngieLake on 19th Oct 2004. This pic shows the rear right of the inside of St Neot Holy Well, with the offerings, and the worn door with its lovely old catch. (I should say that we found this door fastened, and made sure it was securely shut before we left.)"
This is what the church guide book has to say:
"The Holy Well
The holy well is some three hundred yards from the church. It stands near the St Neot river in a level meadow backed by a steep bank planted with trees. One reaches it by turning in beside the Carlyon...

King Doniert's Stone
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 19th Oct 2004

King Doniert's Stone submitted by AngieLake on 19th Oct 2004. In this picture, the interlaced engraving on the side of the tallest stone can be seen more clearly. Granite is very hard stone to carve, so it must have taken a long time to make those patterns. The inscription about King Doniert is on the shaded side of the shorter stone in the foreground.

St Cleer's Well submitted by AngieLake on 20th Oct 2004. This is a close-up of the monk-like figure in the niche on the front wall of the well-house. I couldn't help noticing the phallic shape of the granite point on the roof, though maybe it was just the angle! Perhaps a relic of more Pagan times.

Altarnun Cross

Altarnun Cross submitted by AngieLake on 21st Oct 2004. A view of the lovely old 'Celtic' cross in St Nonna's churchyard at Altarnun (altar of St Non, or Nonna) near Bodmin Moor. (Also known as 'the cathedral of the moor'). In the church leaflet we read: "By the church gate is to be found a very fine celtic cross. As well as being a thing of beauty it is also a great age, probably dating back to the 6th century, the time of St Nonna herself. For one thousand four hundred years, as this cross has stood, people have worshipped God in the churches b...

The Round Pound
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 24th Oct 2004

The Round Pound submitted by AngieLake on 24th Oct 2004. This shows the layout of the Round Pound at Kestor. Underneath, the caption reads: 'Fig.6. General Plan of Round Pound. Prehistoric constructions are shaded, mediaeval are white.' Therefore, it would appear that the four 'radial walls' and the 'small hut' in the outer circle, and the semi-circular 'shelter' in the inner circle, are mediaeval. This leaves the double-walled inner and outer circles to be interpreted as 'prehistoric'. The writing at very top of plan says: "Entrance to pou...

Visited: Yes on 24th Oct 2004

Kestor Settlement submitted by AngieLake on 24th Oct 2004. This old plan of Kes Tor hut circles and fields, includes the Round Pound. It appears that the line of parallel stones that theCaptain queried could be an old drove way. (Here referred to as 'Lower Drove Way'). In very small letters halfway up the right side of the plan, near the letter 'A', is 'Upper Drove Way'. The small print at the bottom of pic says: "Fig 2. General Plan of the Settlement at Kestor, by E.C.Curwen and R.Gurd, with additions. The field walls of the stippled areas are of...

Carreg Samson, Abercastle submitted by AngieLake on 25th Oct 2004. Carreg Sampson in Pembrokeshire stands in such a lovely position that it is usually photographed from the most picturesque angle, showing the bay and distant Strumble Head. This time it is viewed from its longer SE side, giving a better idea of the size, and slope of the capstone. (From memory, the capstone sloped up towards the NE, and Strumble Head.)
