Merrivale SW row 3

Merrivale SW row 3 submitted by AngieLake on 29th Oct 2004. In the foreground, Merrivale Single Row 3 (see thecaptain's overview plan) at sunset on 21st September, the day before the Autumn Equinox, 2004. In the distance, in the glare of the setting sun, can be seen the two west end stones of the southern row. Two other taller stones on the south side of that southern row are also visible above centre, and to right of pic. ('Thecaptain' has a theory that these, and other taller stones in the rows, align with the menhir at certain times of the year.) T...

Boscawen Un

Boscawen Un

Boscawen Un submitted by AngieLake on 31st Oct 2004. Boscawen Un (or 'Boscanoon', as the local man called it), was looking lovely in March 2004, with no ferns to mar the view of the stones. This pic was cobbled together from two separate ones, so wouldn't win any prizes. However, it does give an overview of the site, showing the late afternoon shadow cast by the giant gnomon in the (off) centre. A few minutes later, and a few hundred yards between here and the main road, I discovered the scarily spooky Creeg Tol.

Carn Euny Village submitted by AngieLake on 31st Oct 2004. This view over the Carn Euny Settlement was taken in two shots, which are cobbled together to give an idea of how it looked in March 2004. Bec-Zog's pic is similar to this.

Carn Gluze

Carn Gluze submitted by AngieLake on 31st Oct 2004. Shot of the landward side of Ballowall Barrow (Carn Gluze) taken from the top of the outside 'collar' wall. It shows the depth and narrowness of the gap between the outer and inner cairn. (I have good footage of this area after walking right around the circular 'passage' with my camcorder). The view of the Cornish coast here is spectacular, with Sennen Cove in the distance.

Swinside submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Nov 2004. Swinside in south Cumbria, not far from Millom. One of the most beautiful circles in England, I think. Another panorama made from two photos, cobbled together. The expert on this circle is Jack Morris-Eyton, or JackME, now a member of Meg.Portal.

Aberlemno

Aberlemno submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Nov 2004. The reverse (south side) of my favourite Pictish stone at Aberlemno seemed to have cup-marks carved in the lower part of it. This shot taken 5th July 2001. This is one of the finest Class I Pictish stones. It is of sandstone and stands on the roadside to the north of the church. The design shows a snake, double-disc and Z-rod with a mirror and comb below

Sueno's Stone

Sueno's Stone submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Nov 2004. Defenders preparing for a footie penalty shot?! ... These amusing little figures can be seen on the huge Pictish 'Sueno stone', sheltered inside its glass case at Forres. A shame that the glass reflected the light. Taken 5th July 2001. This Class III stone is one of the finest examples of Dark Age sculptures in Europe. It has been suggested that the enormous and intricate carving shows the coronation of Kenneth Mac Alpin. If so, it would have been erected in the 9th century to inform the P...

Stanton Drew Great Circle

Stanton Drew Great Circle submitted by AngieLake on 12th Nov 2004. One for Templar - panting sheep, sweating buckets in the May heat, in the shade of a stone of the main avenue. (Two days later, they'd been shorn!) For Liz's info, there was a small iron framework structure in the field, not far from the main entrance gate, that I'd not previously noticed, and a group of people were standing inside it, observing ....maybe afraid of the cows too?

'The Queen of the Night', the rare and important Mesopotamian relief on loan from the British Museum, coming close to the end of its countrywide tour. It has only one week left at Cardiff's National Museum and Gallery of Wales before going to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery from 1st December to 19th April 2005. West Kennet Avenue

West Kennet Avenue submitted by AngieLake on 29th Nov 2004. West Kennett Avenue - This is my version of "andyb456"'s 'Jaws', viewed from the inside of the avenue. As you can see, he has quite a few holes, and you have to wonder whether they - especially the larger one at wrist level - were significant. I recently asked if anyone has any idea why this particular shape of prominently angled stones (there's one in Callanish's avenue too) were placed where they are. Was there a moon, sun, star alignment for instance, at a particular time of the year? Perhaps...

Bodowyr

Bodowyr submitted by AngieLake on 5th Dec 2004. This is the gorgeous (and possibly important) view from the 'front' of Bodowyr burial chamber, down the sloping field, and across the Menai Straits towards the noticeable dip in the mountains of North Wales mainland. I would imagine the dip would be the gap between Snowdon (on the right) and Glyder Fawr (left), where the Llanberis Pass runs. Maybe the sun rose in that dip at Midwinter Solstice, as it would seem to be in a southeasterly direction? Its rays would then have illuminated the tomb ...

St John's Well (Tavistock)

St John's Well (Tavistock) submitted by AngieLake on 31st Dec 2004. St John's Well at Tavistock (SX478739) is tucked into the hill in a public park area on the east bank of the River Tavy. A footpath runs parallel to the river bank on this side of the river, and a fairly slippery (it had been raining) flagstone path leads off at right-angles across the grass towards the little granite-arched well, and its capstone with 'St John's Well' carved on it.On the opposite side of the river, some walls still stand, bordering the footpath, which are from the ruins of t...

Carn Euny Fogou

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. The 'Beehive Hut' in Carn Euny's Fogou. The patch of sunshine through a grille (see Jim Champion's excellent arty picture of 1.1.05) is visible far right. This gives some daylight to what would otherwise be quite an eerie place. It is believed to have been the first structure built on this site, and the fogou was created later. Because of this, it is thought that the SE-facing doorway of this chamber once allowed the midwinter rising sun to shine through it an hour or so after dawn, thus ill...

Dunnabridge Pound submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. This shows a view over the Pound from outside the walls at a higher point. The main road runs ESE/WNW across the middle of the photo, with the narrower, visible one going SW down the valley towards Dunnabridge Farm. The ancient Dunnabridge Pound Farm is just out of sight on the right of picture. In the centre of the picture, just to the right of the field gate is The Judge's Seat.
