Stanton Drew Great Circle

Stanton Drew Great Circle submitted by AngieLake on 12th Nov 2004. One for Templar - panting sheep, sweating buckets in the May heat, in the shade of a stone of the main avenue. (Two days later, they'd been shorn!) For Liz's info, there was a small iron framework structure in the field, not far from the main entrance gate, that I'd not previously noticed, and a group of people were standing inside it, observing ....maybe afraid of the cows too?

West Kennet Avenue

West Kennet Avenue submitted by AngieLake on 29th Nov 2004. West Kennett Avenue - This is my version of "andyb456"'s 'Jaws', viewed from the inside of the avenue. As you can see, he has quite a few holes, and you have to wonder whether they - especially the larger one at wrist level - were significant. I recently asked if anyone has any idea why this particular shape of prominently angled stones (there's one in Callanish's avenue too) were placed where they are. Was there a moon, sun, star alignment for instance, at a particular time of the year? Perhaps...

Bodowyr

Bodowyr submitted by AngieLake on 5th Dec 2004. This is the gorgeous (and possibly important) view from the 'front' of Bodowyr burial chamber, down the sloping field, and across the Menai Straits towards the noticeable dip in the mountains of North Wales mainland. I would imagine the dip would be the gap between Snowdon (on the right) and Glyder Fawr (left), where the Llanberis Pass runs. Maybe the sun rose in that dip at Midwinter Solstice, as it would seem to be in a southeasterly direction? Its rays would then have illuminated the tomb ...

St John's Well (Tavistock)

St John's Well (Tavistock) submitted by AngieLake on 31st Dec 2004. St John's Well at Tavistock (SX478739) is tucked into the hill in a public park area on the east bank of the River Tavy. A footpath runs parallel to the river bank on this side of the river, and a fairly slippery (it had been raining) flagstone path leads off at right-angles across the grass towards the little granite-arched well, and its capstone with 'St John's Well' carved on it.On the opposite side of the river, some walls still stand, bordering the footpath, which are from the ruins of t...

Carn Euny Fogou

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. The 'Beehive Hut' in Carn Euny's Fogou. The patch of sunshine through a grille (see Jim Champion's excellent arty picture of 1.1.05) is visible far right. This gives some daylight to what would otherwise be quite an eerie place. It is believed to have been the first structure built on this site, and the fogou was created later. Because of this, it is thought that the SE-facing doorway of this chamber once allowed the midwinter rising sun to shine through it an hour or so after dawn, thus ill...
