Cae'r-hen-Eglwys submitted by AngieLake on 9th Aug 2006. SEM at Cae'r Hen Eglwys stones, giving a sense of scale. I'd been looking forward to seeing these for ages, so thanks a lot Simon! It would be good to explore the field when the undergrowth has died down.

Pond Cairn submitted by AngieLake on 28th Feb 2010. This picture titled 'Pond Cairn, Bridgend; after excavation' comes from 'Prehistoric England' by Grahame Clark, F.S.A. (4th edition, 1948. 1st edition was 1940). Sem thinks it now lies under an industrial estate. I also found this possible link.

National Museum Cardiff submitted by AngieLake on 21st Nov 2004. 'The Queen of the Night', the rare and important Mesopotamian relief on loan from the British Museum, coming close to the end of its countrywide tour. It has only one week left at Cardiff's National Museum and Gallery of Wales before going to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery from 1st December to 19th April 2005. (See today's comment on Cardiff's National Museum and Gallery of Wales section for more info on the figure.)

St Lythans

St Lythans submitted by AngieLake on 19th Jul 2008. The 'St Lythans Guardian'. I first noticed the amazing (and quite spooky) human likeness of this stone in 2002, and it seems even more striking now, on a 2nd visit. [The hole is the mouth, and two depressions where eyes would be. The rest of the 'body' is about right for size ratio. Was this intended, I wonder?]

Trecastle Mountain ENE

Trecastle Mountain ENE submitted by AngieLake on 6th Nov 2005. This stone is the same one featured on this site page by SEM, when he explains how nearby stones seem to form an avenue leading to the main circle at Y Pigwn. Dowsing, when SEM showed me the area at the end of July, confirmed this. This stone (seen here looking across the NW avenue route towards NE) actually dowsed as the left-hand one of a pair of huge portals at the beginning of flatter ground on which the circle stands. The other huge stone used to stand near the tussock of grass above it i...

Gwernvale submitted by AngieLake on 16th Oct 2007. A reconstruction of the appearance of Gwernvale from 'The Brecon Beacons National Park' [Countryside Commission Official Guide] by Roger Thomas, Webb & Bower (Michael Joseph), 1987. What fascinated me was the arrangement of posts at the 'false entrance' in the horned forecourt, as I always get three or four 'rod-openings' [ie: my L-shaped rods open at right-angles to each other] on final approach to the 'entrance' during ritual movement dowses at chambered tombs. Here, it says the posts are ...

Old Radnor Church

Old Radnor Church submitted by AngieLake on 5th Jul 2008. Tim - this is for you! The old font in Old Radnor church that is believed to come from a megalithic stone - "probably the largest and oldest font in Britain" (quote from an old 'Red Guide' to Wales). On the day I visited (6th June 08), volunteers were cutting the grass in the churchyard, so maybe that was why the door to the church was open?

I am sure Mr Castleden wouldn't begrudge us the use of this helpful map on p.71 of the above book, to enable us to understand the layout of the various sites in the Walton Basin. He describes this area's prehistory under the heading 'Hindwell - a major ceremonial focus in Wales.' (Note the Fourstones, upper left.) Carreg Wen Fawr Y Rugos Stone Row

Carreg Wen Fawr Y Rugos Stone Row submitted by AngieLake on 22nd Apr 2010. Looking approx SW towards the patch of dry grass where the stone row is situated. Straight up from the right side of this stone [which may be part of a processional way towards the row from the valley of the Usk River at Llangynidr], you'll see the small patch almost on the brow of the near horizon. Above it is a shallow rise, upon which a cairn is situated. By dowsing, I also found a cairn on the slight rise to the left, where the near horizon meets the falling slope of the distant mountain...

Carreg Samson, Abercastle

Carreg Samson, Abercastle submitted by AngieLake on 25th Oct 2004. Carreg Sampson in Pembrokeshire stands in such a lovely position that it is usually photographed from the most picturesque angle, showing the bay and distant Strumble Head. This time it is viewed from its longer SE side, giving a better idea of the size, and slope of the capstone. (From memory, the capstone sloped up towards the NE, and Strumble Head.)
