Zennor Quoit

Zennor Quoit submitted by AngieLake on 18th Oct 2006. One more shot that is slightly different. The Quoit is so enthralling artistically, that even a slight move reveals another great design. You can see how prolific the bracken was, but I was also delighted to see lots of wild cornflowers growing around its base.

Yar Tor Prehistoric Homestead

Yar Tor Prehistoric Homestead submitted by AngieLake on 6th May 2009. The most prominent stones of the site, at the higher end of the area. Butler says: "A large hut (9.5 m) with some massive stones in its wall ...", so I imagine this is what he was referring to.

It was a *very* hot day, and Dr Burl and other important people were still cooling off in the marquee by the Kings Men, having walked to see these stones at the end of their new pathway to declare it 'open'.

West Kennett Long Barrow

West Kennett Long Barrow submitted by AngieLake on 3rd Aug 2007. Stone 23 stands on the right-hand side of WKLB end chamber. (Piggott and Atkinson's excavation plan in 1956-57 gives numbers to stones.) I didn't notice any special features in these stones (see also No.s 21 and 22) when taking the photos, but from this angle a long face can be seen. (Long nose near right of pic, and small round eyes above, with small - 'o' - mouth lower right.)

West Kennet Avenue

West Kennet Avenue submitted by AngieLake on 29th Nov 2004. West Kennett Avenue - This is my version of "andyb456"'s 'Jaws', viewed from the inside of the avenue. As you can see, he has quite a few holes, and you have to wonder whether they - especially the larger one at wrist level - were significant. I recently asked if anyone has any idea why this particular shape of prominently angled stones (there's one in Callanish's avenue too) were placed where they are. Was there a moon, sun, star alignment for instance, at a particular time of the year? Perhaps...

Wendron South

Wendron South submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Nov 2002. Wendron / Nine Maidens Stone Circles SW683365 Parking in layby on the west side of the road opposite the footpath. The path was heavily rutted by cattle, indicating that if it was wet, this would be extremely boggy. Access is over a low point in the wall right next to the stones. Next time I visit I must read the guide books beforehand - two of the stones are actually set in the wall! One still in its original place, the other moved. The field was high with dock when I visited, and had to ...

It is said to be four separate springs, three containing iron and each curing a different illness. Its niches held offerings and cups. Stone seats gave rest to the weary traveller."
