Willy Howe

Willy Howe submitted by DavidRaven on 9th Jun 2003. Part of the 'Great Yorkshire Barrows' group. To say that these have been called by some, 'the ancestors' of the mighty Silbury Hill in Wiltshire, you'd think a little more would be made of them! Reckoned to be as old as Duggleby Howe, and a similar size: seven and a half meters high and thirty six and a half meters in diameter. Attempts at finding its secrets in 1857 and again thirty years later yielded nothing. A pit about nine feet deep was discovered but was bereft of objects or human ...

White Moor Down Stone Circle, Dartmoor, Devon SX634896 This is a truly lovely stone circle, situated on a flat saddle of land between Little Hound Tor and Hound Tor, miles away from any signs of modern life in the middle of the desolate moor, and there are views for miles around in almost all directions from the site. There are 18 remaining stones of a probable nineteen arranged fairly evenly, in a circle of diameter 20 metres. The stones are arranged flat side inwards, and vary in height bet...

Wendron South

Wendron South submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Nov 2002. Wendron / Nine Maidens Stone Circles SW683365 Parking in layby on the west side of the road opposite the footpath. The path was heavily rutted by cattle, indicating that if it was wet, this would be extremely boggy. Access is over a low point in the wall right next to the stones. Next time I visit I must read the guide books beforehand - two of the stones are actually set in the wall! One still in its original place, the other moved. The field was high with dock when I visited, and had to ...

Tyfos submitted by vicky on 7th Jun 2002. Tyfos Circle, Llandrillo, Denbighshire GR: SJ028388 This fantastic little circle lies in a farmer's field adjacent to a country lane near Llandrillo. Around 20 stones stand in a ring which has been described as either a denuded ringcairn or a free-standing stone circle. Although it is on private land it is well worth a visit and there are several gaps in the hedge making viewing easy.
