Glasscombe Corner Stone Row

Glasscombe Corner Stone Row submitted by Brian Byng on 7th Feb 2002. Glasscombe Corner is in part a double row with 1/3rd of its length a single row only. This is similar to one of the Drizzlecombe rows. Grid ref SX 6610 6080. It is about 180m long and has no obvious monument at either end. Its azimuth uphill is 216 with the horizon above it at an altitude of 3 degrees. This gives a declination of - 28.3 which is close to that for the most southerly moonset. The uphill end of the row does not however break the skyline as the row ends someway below the horizon.

Butterdon Stone Circle

Butterdon Stone Circle submitted by thecaptain on 3rd Aug 2004. Butterdon Stone Circle, Butterdon Hill, Dartmoor, Devon SX656588 Butterdon Hill stone row starts at a cairn which is the usual mass of stones, about 8 metres in diameter. Outside the remains of the cairn is a ring of large fallen slabs, which once must have made an impressive ring. This view is to the southwest.

Hobajons Cross

Hobajons Cross submitted by thecaptain on 6th Aug 2004. Hobajons Cross. This relatively large stone is part of the Butterdon Hill row, and has a simple cross carved into it on the western face. It appears to be a part of the original alignment, adapted for more recent use as a marker for ancient tracks crossing the moor.

Glasscombe Ball North

Glasscombe Ball North submitted by thecaptain on 14th Jul 2004. Glasscombe Ball stone row, Dartmoor, Devon SX657604 The remains of this row would have started at a cairn on top of the ridge and progressed in a south-easterly direction away from it. With all the stones flattened to the ground, the layout of the original row is not easy to determine, but would have been at least 80 metres in length.

Butterdon Hill Row

Butterdon Hill Row submitted by thecaptain on 6th Aug 2004. The remains of this fantastic row run for nearly 2 kilometres across the moor in a roughly northerly direction from Butterdon Hill. The row drops off from the ridge at Butterdon Hill barrow and continues towards the top of Piles Hill. At the lowest part of the slopes, the alignment is pretty well defined. This view is looking south as the row meanders its way across the lower slopes. On the skyline can be seen Butterdon Hill Barrow, at which point the row reaches the top of the ridge and ...

Glasscombe Corner Stone Row

Glasscombe Corner Stone Row submitted by thecaptain on 16th Jul 2004. Glasscombe Corner stone row, Dartmoor, Devon SX661608 Just above Glasscombe Corner can be found the remains of this fine stone row. Unusually, it has its cairn at the lower end, and marches off up the hill for about 150 metres in a south westerly direction. View here of the cairn and looking up the row. The cairn is fairly small and insignificant, although the remains of what was once possibly a ring of slabs can be seen.

Log Text: The large recumbent stones can be seen , many covered in moss and peat. Recent cutting work evidence. Those must have been a grand avenue when they were upright, assuming they were. The east to west orientation at the end of Butterdon row, which leads to it, is interesting. They have a fantastic view of Plymouth Sound too.
