Drethem Schalenstein

Drethem Schalenstein submitted by holger_rix on 16th Sep 2009. Schalenstein (cup marked stone) near Drethem. The stone was found by a farmer in 1968. Somebody counted 44 marks scattered over one side of the stone. The stone was brought to a place near the road from Drethem to Hitzacker. A very inappropiate place. And, in my oppinion, it should have been placed with the marks showing upwards. That would have been, most likely, closer to the original position.

Log Text: The cups are clearly visible and can also be felt very well. Unfortunately, due to the stone itself, they don't come into 'magic' like on the other photos right now.

Driehausen Grosssteingrab

Driehausen Grosssteingrab submitted by Martin_L on 1st Oct 2009. Central part of this impressive large chamber viewed from the South-East. The central capstones are out of place as several orthostats of the northern long-side were moved during "excavations" by the Graf (Earl) Münster in the beginning of the 19th century. Nowadays unfortunately it is badly neglected and suffers further damage by heavy tree growth inside the chamber. (2007)

Driehausen Menhir

Driehausen Menhir submitted by AlexHunger on 12th Dec 2005. Probably modern Menhir near Driehausen Chambered tomb. There are a lot of glacial eratics in the area from which this could be conveniantly used to beautify a small village.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Big boulder on the wayside. If you're already in the area, you can stop for a moment. If I understood correctly today, the locals from the village set up their maypole next to the boulder (but could also have been a topping-out tree)

Log Text: At the edge of the valley of the brook 'Alfbach' there is a earth measuring that is 2 meters high and is surrounded by a wide moat. The almost rectangular bulge of earth measuring of 24 x 15 meters has a steep slope and an almost flat surface of 11 x 20 meters. The moat has recently been deepened and widened to serve as a fish pond. The shape and condition no longer reflect the early medieval dimensions. Whether the connection between the moat and the Alfbach existed before can therefore no longer be conclusively clarified. There are also no historical sources about the exact age and affiliation (for example to a count, etc.). However, due to the type of facility, the age can be narrowed down to the 11th to 12th centuries. During this period, however, it must have been given up again and was not expanded into a castle.
Detailed archaeological investigations have not yet been carried out (Status: 1999).

Dübberort Grab 1 submitted by AlexHunger on 11th Dec 2005. 18 Meters by 3 Meters large chambered tomb, with 5 good capstones. 140 Meters Altitude. Largely overgrown with ferns, but with a good amount of the tumulus still visible, which however blocks view of uprights. End stone, appears to have rolled down tumulus, but makes a nice bench.

Dübberort Tumulus submitted by AlexHunger on 11th Dec 2005. Large 15 Meter Diameter Tumulus. There are traces that someone already tried to dig into it. This sugest that there is no megalith underneath it.

Duenenfaehr Steingrab (1) submitted by Martin_L on 30th Sep 2009. December 2007. Viewed from the West. The chamber is deeply embedded into the remains of the barrow. The large southwestern capstone (3,5m x 2,2m x 1,2m) is resting on at least two partly visible orthostats.

Log Text: Unfortunately, there are no easy parking spaces for cars nearby. The grave can be reached via a narrow little path that first leads to a private cemetery. The megalith grave is located directly behind it on the tumulus.
