Heringsberg
Date Added: 9th Nov 2022
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Germany (Saxony-Anhalt)
Visited: Yes on 7th Nov 2022. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 3 Access 4

Heringsberg submitted by Martin_L on 1st Jun 2012. The entrance in the SW. The massive chamber originally was covered by a barrow, 70m diameter and 10m high. The barrow is largely removed, but the chamber still partly embedded into remains of it and largely filled with earth. It is of trapezoidal shape, oriented SW-NE. Length is at least 9m, width over 3m at the NE-part. At least the NE-end orthostat is missing. It is hard or impossible to reach the site during growing season.

Log Text: Wonderful museum - the parking facilities are a nightmare though. It's best to use a parking garage. The collection is well sorted for this. Unfortunately, a nicer ambience is somehow missing in some places. Otherwise I was completely satisfied with my visit!

Heinschenwall Ringwall submitted by CharcoalBurner89 on 13th Sep 2021. The stones were probably added to the ramparts from destroyed megalithic tombs from the forest in the 20th century.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: The wall of 'Heinschenwall' probably gave the nearby village its current name. A connection to the 'Hinzel' Forest (or: 'Heinzel') can also be identified in terms of language. Perhaps the original name of the fort was lost over the centuries. There is also only historical evidence of the facility in the middle of the 17th century. The shape and size of the complex suggest that it was built in the 9th to 11th centuries.
As in the case of the complex in nearby Drittgeest, more precise archeological investigations have not been carried out so far (status: 1999). The stones that can also be seen in the photos were probably only added to the ramparts in the 20th century and probably come from destroyed megalithic graves in the nearby forest.

Heine Steingrab 2 submitted by Martin_L on 11th Jan 2008. Heine Tomb 2 (Sprockhoff No. 626)
The southend of the chamber.
Most likely the two southernmost uprights on the western- and eastern chamberside were removed in historic times. So there is some evidence, that the large southern capstone was originally placed on 5 uprights. In general this is a rare feature in this area but there is another example in the neighbourhood (Lehnstedt, Tomb 1, Sprockhoff No. 621).

Log Text: A really beautiful dolmen even if it is heavily overgrown. There is no direct path to reach it, so you have to find a route through the forest via GPS.

The endstone and the adjacent pair of uprights are preserved and most probably in situ. The original chamber-size is unknown.
According to Körner (in Sprockhoff, Ernst (et al.) – Atlas der Megalithgräber Deutschlands – Teil 3 Niedersachsen - Westfalen, Habelt, Bonn, 1975, p. 22) the only remaining capstone was out of place but moved back on the uprights in 1966. ...

Hegebusch Steingrab submitted by holger_rix on 22nd Apr 2010. Remains of a tomb in a forest west of Brillit.
Area is called Hegebusch.
Marked as 'Stone Tomb' on the topographic map.
At least four boulders in a row look like capstones,
there might be a Chambered Tomb in the ground here.
Unfortunately, no further information.

Log Text: Since Holger Rix's visit in 2010, the remains of the megalithic grave have been heavily overgrown. The path is very difficult as there is no direct way to the megalithic grave. The forest is heavily used for forestry purposes, which makes the path even more difficult.

The monument is designed by Norwegian architect Christian Christie. Norwegian national poet, Ivar Aasen, wrote a poem entitled Haraldshaugen to commemorate the event.
