Log Text: The ascent is a bit difficult and a bit dangerous in wet weather. The effort for someone like me, who comes 'from the flat country of Lower Saxony', is a small challenge (with a smile!)

Visbeker Braut

Visbeker Braut submitted by Martin_L on 18th Jan 2011. The SW-side narrow side. It is built of 4 enormous kerbstones, all appr. 3m high. Like at similar sites, the kerbstones at the narrow sides are the largest. The other short side in the NW is partly destroyed, but two large corner stones are still in place. These larger kerbstones at the short sides of long barrows are often called “Wächter” (means: “guard” or “guardian”) in Germany. March 2008

Log Text: In my opinion, the megalithic tomb 'Visbeker Braut' is more beautiful than the 'Bräutigam'. I have also taken this place very much into my heart.

Visbek Steingrab 1 submitted by madcat on 27th Apr 2006. This grave is part of the ensemble of megaliths around the Visbeker Brautigum (bridegroom). It lies very close to the busy A1 highway. Interestingly, the chamber seems to have been enlarged after it was built.

Log Text: Megalithic tomb with a dark-sounding name. Very impressive. At the moment, however, no direct access is possible and is enclosed by a fence (danger of trees falling). However, you can still get close enough.

Log Text: Note from me: The completion of a new building is currently planned for the year 2030. The museum may be open to the public for another 1-2 years before the new building begins. So if you don't want to wait, you should plan your visit now or wait for the reopening (which should be more impressive).

Vangsgård Runddysse submitted by Martin_L on 1st Jul 2010. Extended rectangular dolmen chamber built of 5 orthostats, covered by a large capstone. One pair of passage orthostats is preserved. The whole ensemble still is largely covered by its well-preserved round barrow, diameter appr. 20m, height up to 3. Kerb-stones may be hidden by the eroded edges of the barrow. Scan of B/W photo taken in April 1991. The barrow was overgrown then.
