Log Text: Autun reported correctly. This megalithic tomb (although it is part of the 'Straße der Megalithkultur' - 'Route of the Megalithic Culture') is completely overgrown. It takes urgent care. I got the impression that somehow it was forgotten despite the signage.

All chamber orthostats preserved and in situ except for No. 2 of the SE long side. Two capstones (No. 1 and 2 counting from NE) blown to pieces and removed. Two capstones (No. 3 and 4) collapsed in the chamber, fragments of the fifth capstone in the SW (April 2010)

Schmeersteine Grosssteingrab submitted by Martin_L on 14th Apr 2010. The remaining chamber part viewed from the South-West. Foreground right: orthostat S5. Probably explosives were used in the 19th century (as usual) to destroy the site. Fortunately it partly survived. April 2010
Visit Remark: Even in early April there were plenty of ticks.

Bargloyer Steinkiste submitted by Martin_L on 11th May 2010. The capstone photographed with additional lighting to enhance the visibilty of the more than 60 cup-marks. Nevertheless due to the partly undulating surface of the granite erratic it is hard to show all cup-marks even when using several light sources. Documentation using frottage-technique for example would lead to more accurate results. May 2010

Visbeker Braut
Date Added: 20th Oct 2021
Site Type: Long Barrow
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 19th Oct 2021. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 4

Visbeker Braut submitted by Martin_L on 18th Jan 2011. The SW-side narrow side. It is built of 4 enormous kerbstones, all appr. 3m high.
Like at similar sites, the kerbstones at the narrow sides are the largest.
The other short side in the NW is partly destroyed, but two large corner stones are still in place.
These larger kerbstones at the short sides of long barrows are often called “Wächter” (means: “guard” or “guardian”) in Germany.

Visbek Opfertisch submitted by Martin_L on 12th Feb 2009. From the NW. The large capstone on the western chamber part still measures 5m x 3m. It was damaged by blasting attempts. Two pieces of it are fallen into the chamber. Original length was 7m. Staff for scaling reasons measuring 1m.

Log Text: Megalithic tomb with a dark-sounding name. Very impressive. At the moment, however, no direct access is possible and is enclosed by a fence (danger of trees falling). However, you can still get close enough.
