The Egyptian authorities are about to start a refurbishment of the neck, shoulder and breast area, hence the scaffolding.

Sakkara Pyramid submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. The world's first large stone structure built under Pharao Djoser founder of the 3rd Dynasty of the Old Kingdom.
Under the Architect Imhotep, the original small mastaba was expanded in all directions to a height of 62 Meters, a length of 123 Meters and a width of 107 Meters. The stone blocks are much smaller than those of the later pyramids.

Sneferu's Bent Pyramid submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Sneferu's second attempt at building a proper pyramid. Half way through construction, he changed the angle from 54 degrees to 43 degrees. It was first believed this was to avoid having the casing collapse like at Meidum, but now it is thought the weight of the material was causing cracks in the chambers. The reduced angle reduced the amount of material piling up on top. There are entrances to the North and to the West for the two corbelled chambers.

Log Text: A visit to this temple can be part of a round trip through some of the amazing cultural and geographical variety India has to offer, with the hill station Shimla as starting and finishing point. I did it using public transport a long time ago.
From Shimla, overnight journey to Manali. From there buses leave towards Spiti Valley, where people greet you with a jole' rather than the normally more common namaste.
First stop once over the Rohtang Pass: Kaza, a green oasis at the feet of immense snow capped mountains. Around Kaza it's possible to visit the picturesque Ki Gompa and Tibetan style villages like Kibber. Driving on, a stop at Dhankar monastery is a must, it was built almost 1000 years ago on a rock cliff dominating the valley and the confluence of its two main rivers. Then on through the lunar landscape to Tabo, a village built near the caves where Buddhist monks used to retreat. At the town monastery, built in 996A.D., I admired what I consider the best (although quite damaged) Buddhist paintings I've had the chance to see.
On to Kinnaur district then! The mountain sides there are lush with vegetation, so many orchards! A stop in Kalpa to admire the view over the sacred mountain Kinnaur Kailash, and from there it's possible to continue towards Sangla, Kamru (with its own wooden tower at the main temple) and the border town Chitkul. Saharan is the last stop before journeying back to Shimla. There the hills are covered in woodland, the low clouds can't hide the vibrant colour of the Hindu temples nor the spires of the Christian churches. Shimla can easily be reached from Delhi by car, plane or taking the tourist train that runs up hill on a narrow gauge track.
