Swinside

Swinside submitted by AngieLake on 19th Apr 2020. This large block is stone 30 at the South of Swinside circle. It was one of the focal points in a dowse I did there on 19th June 2002, the evening I met Jack Morris Eyton. It was the link with moves 17 and 18 in this plan.

Log Text: Distinctive tall pointed northerly and large squared southerly stones. At some parts of the ring, stones are very close or touching, suggesting that originally it was a solid circle. So it is possible not correct to say it is complete and perfect. To the north east can be seen the peaks of Dunnerdale, ergo you can see Swinside from Dunnerdale fells. There is a good view of the stone circle if you climb up Swinside fell to the west, from where you will also see a grand view of the Lakes peaks, the Dudder estuary, and offshore windmills (sailing just isn’t fun anymore).

White Hag

White Hag submitted by nicoladidsbury on 29th Mar 2004. White Hag Hill Stone Circle The circle has eleven stones, and an outlier. It sits on the hillside above an enclosed area containing earth banks, looking very much like an abandoned hillfort, although there is nothing marked on the OS map. Also a fantastic ancient spring called "Kings Well".

The Cockpit submitted by LivingRocks on 18th Mar 2005. A panoramic view of the Cockpit Stone Circle which according to Magicmap ‘includes a circular kerbed stone bank 2.8m -11.2m wide and up to 0.5m high which encloses an area approximately 27m in diameter. There are 27 (?) standing and recumbent stones set largely into the internal face of this bank, thereby creating the stone circle.
