Samson, South Hill

Samson, South Hill submitted by Thorgrim on 2nd Jul 2003. The now uninhabited island of Samson contains dozens of entrance graves and cairns. This entrance grave is the finest and it overlooks the flats where stone walls are uncovered at low tide. The Scilly Islands were just one island in Roman times (with the exception of Agnes and Annet. The drowned land has often been seen as the Lost Land of Lyonesse.

Samson Hill, Bryher

Samson Hill, Bryher submitted by Thorgrim on 8th Aug 2004. Massive kerbstones surround this grave. This view looks across the sea to Tresco. During the Bronze Age and beyond the Roman occupation, the area covered by sea would have been fertile fields. At that time, there was one main island only.

Visited: Would like to visit

Nornour

Nornour submitted by Thorgrim on 4th Nov 2003. The island of Nornour (SV 944147) is less than four acres in size and is joined to Great Ganilly at low tide. Yet the excavations of the early '70's revealed the remains of a major settlement which was occupied from the middle of the Bronze Age to the Romano-British Iron Age. Nornour clearly reveals the effects of rising sea levels, as this tiny scrap of land could never have supported such a thriving community. Many more houses are doubtless lost beneath the sea and right up until Tudor ...

Normandy Down

Normandy Down submitted by paulcall on 31st Oct 2006. A view of the delapidated easterly entrance grave looking north towards St Martin's. This grave gets trodden on a lot, as it is not normally covered in scrub like the other two. There are more stones to be seen here, but they are rather a jumble.

Stoney Littleton

Stoney Littleton submitted by TheCaptain on 18th Mar 2005. Stoney Littleton barrow viewed from the west. Its a cracking little barrow, with the most wonderful passage and chambers inside, and the powers that be have even left a decent sized area around it free of any farming activity. A lovely sunny day, but some of the walk to the barrow was horrendously muddy. The fields around the barrow had recently been ploughed, a crop of beet of some sort having been the last grown.
