Tair Carn Uchaf

Site Type: Cairn
Country: Wales (Carmarthenshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

Tair Carn Uchaf submitted by sem on 23rd Mar 2015. Cairn C
This shot is taken from Tair Carn Isaf Cairn A, and Cairn C nestles beautifully in the notch. Cairn A seems to be relatively insignificant until you notice this 'sightline'. Move 5 yards in any direction and this effect vanishes.
This cannot be pure chance!

Log Text: The spring is located at the rear right of the chapel ruins. Access to the site is via a footpath, about 350m from a car park. The Gower Inn charges £2 for 3 hours parking. The footpath exits the rear of the car park and leads directly to the site. The footpath surface is hard packed stone for the most part.
There isn't much made of the spring, most of the site is a ruined chapel. The water was flowing quite freely on 2/2/22.

St Peters's Well submitted by rogerkread on 26th Jul 2014. St Peter's Well, close to the chapel remains. Note the accompanying chalice etc! I was told by a local that there is another holy well close nearby, St John's, but the undergrowth in the summer was not conducive to prolonged searching, so I didn't find it.

Ffynnon Gwenlais submitted by nddavies on 30th Apr 2011. This is a view from the public road south of the river. The direction is roughly NW.
A concrete dam or weir is visible with a rectangular drain cover in the middle of the top surface. I can't make out how far upstream the spring would be.

St Dyfnog's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 11th Dec 2004. St Dyfnog’s Well, it would seem, does not predate the Christian era, gaining it’s powers to heal not only the scab and the itch but also deafness, dumbness and smallpox when St Dyfnog (a 6th century saint) did penance by standing in the ice cold waters as they tumbled from a rocky bank and into a quiet, sunlit, wooded dell. Water still gushes from several spots on that rocky bank and gathers in the rectangular, marble bathing pool added during the Georgian period.

Log Text: A lovely spot hidden in the woods. Access is either from the churchyard, along a reasonably level path, or from the road via an entrance hole in the wall. This second path is shorter but rather more difficult. If you have mobility issues I would suggest choosing to head in from the churchyard, and follow the stream uphill.
The well takes the form of a shallow rectangular tray, about 6 feet by 15 feet. There are at least two visible inlets, one of which is from a stream that flows through limestone, as evidenced by the shallow depressions that the water flows through. A small waterfall allows water into the tray, before exiting at the base under a small bridge. The water appears to be about 8 inches deep. The tray and bridge are in reasonably good repair, but could do with some mild TLC.
There is access to most sides of the tray, which is nestled at the foot of a steep slope. It's in some woodland that is quite open so there is plenty of sunlight on a sunny day. No interpretation board is present, which is a shame.

Ffynnon Cynhafal submitted by KiwiBetsy on 8th Sep 2006.
The well had a reputation for healing warts which were pricked with a pin which was then thrown into the water with a prayer to St Cynhafal requesting a cure …. the warts should disappear shortly after and several cures have been authenticated in recent times. The owner of the well told us that the water used to be used for baptism and in years past busloads of people used to visit.

Whitewell (St Marys)

Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: Wales (Wrexham)

Whitewell (St Marys) submitted by TimPrevett on 11th Sep 2008. St Mary's Whitewell stands on a small raise mound, to the south of which are two wells. One well is still visible though overgrown behind a wooden enclosure by a very short walk through two gates on the SW of the church's perimeter. The well had been tested for calcium (perhaps giving the name) though was not present. A sign in the church recognises that it may well have been originally placed there in relation to earlier veneration of the wells.

Country: England (Staffordshire)

Nun's Well (Cannock Wood) submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Sep 2008. The site of Nun's Well can be accessed by a permissive path from the north from the car park. It is now sealed off by an old gate, chicken wire, galvanised sheets and earth - right beneath an oak tree. If you look carefully to the north east of the trunk, there is a nook through which you can put your arm and camera, revealing a recessed well housing and the materials which now block it to the front.

Log Text: The well is accessible via a footpath and a couple of stiles. It's a permissive path and there are likely to be animals in the surrounding fields. The well itself is fenced off with an electric fence, at the foot of a large oak tree.
