Caherbaroul Pair submitted by KiwiJon on 7th Nov 2007. A pair of magnificent stones in a commanding position high above the valley. Each one must be at least 8 feet high. The nearby fort is visible for miles. There is also a tiny cross slab located a couple of hundred metres further downhill and up a short farm track to the right.

Visible from the roadside but you'll have to hurdle a wire sheep fence to get into the field where the stones are located.

Log Text: In forest, on NW slope of Rock Hill on E side of Clyda River valley. Possible five-stone circle represented by one erect and three prostrate slabs. Orthostat is 1.15m L, 0.25m T and 1.1m H. Socket visible beside prostrate slab to W indicates diameter of c. 4.4m. Pair of standing stones (CO051-178----) stands 10m to NNW.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).

Everything ages, some things well and others not so well. Unfortunately this site has seen better times. The circle is a ruin, only four stones are visible and only one stands. In earlier times this would have been a good site overlooking the surrounding countryside from an elevated position with a stone pair close by.

A Sitka spruce plantation now covers the area and the site is surrounded by thick pine vegetation. Access is a bl***y nightmare, take a chainsaw or be prepared to crawl.

Log Text: In forest, on NW slopes of Rock Hill, on E side of Clyda River valley.Stones, aligned NE-SW, stand 1.6m apart; overall length is 2.9m. NE stone is 0.45m L, 0.45m T and 1.4m H. SW stone is 0.55m L, 0.5m T and 1.55m H. Possible five-stone circle (CO051-018----) stands 10m to SSE. (O Nualláin 1988, 242, no. 85)

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).

Nice stones but access is brutal. Located on the edge of a Sitka spruce plantation the last few metres to get from the forest track to the site will leave you exhausted as you thrash your way through undergrowth. Take some sort of GPS device or compass or you might never get alive.

Log Text: About a mile and a half walk from the nearest public road on a good forest track but the last 200 metres are a real battle with nature as the circle is located quite deep in a conifer plantation with no easy route in.

Big slice of imagination required as the conifers block any view of the surrounding landscape. It makes for a very picturesque seeing though. I liked it.
