Log Text: Apparently this is part of a stone circle, according to some "dowsers", despite there being absolutely no evidence of a circle Apart from "the" Castlerigg stone circle.
The dowsers may have been better employed getting out a compass.
This stone, set approximately 75m from Castlerigg stone circle, is on an alignment with the centre of the circle of southwest to northeast with the circle to the northeast. It is obviously the stone circles marker stone to indicate the direction on the summer solstice sunrise. This is a common arrangement.

Log Text: The cairn looks as though it would have been chambered, with one, or possibly more, peripheral chambers added.
What now look like 4 or 5 stones of a circle, to me, look more like the surrounding kirb stones like those at the Clava cairns.
Although this site is very ruinous, I think, with a little imagination, this would have been a Clava type chambered burial cairn.
The surrounding circle of stones, which is a very big diameter (at a wild guess about 30m+ diameter) looks like an enormous ring cairn with the burial cairn nestled up against it.
It has been speculated that this was a settlement prior to have the burial cairn. In the neolithic/early bronze age, it wasn't, apparently, unusual for a domestic hut to become the burial cairn for the passed occupant. If this was the case here it could explain the position of the cairn within the large ring of stones that could have been the perimeter of the settlement.
Interesting, thought provoking site.

Log Text: A very interesting site. An aerial view shows this could well have been a stone circle. However there are several other stones that appear to form a row within where a circle (if it was one) would be.

Although it is very much larger than any of the other row stones, and it's quartz, it's difficult to see how it's not part of the row.

Maen Tarw submitted by Johnny on 10th Oct 2001. Maen Tarw Standing Stone (SN 722 833)
Maen Tarw standing stone is close to the Buwch a'r Llo stone pair (cf) but just within the forestry block, again adjacent to the road. It is a small block of unusual appearance, probably due to severe weathering over the years! Whatever function it originally served is no longer known but it may have, in some way, been linked to the Buwch a'r Llo pair.

Log Text: Definitely a polissoir. There are at least 26 grooves from polishing/sharpening and at least 4 concaved areas, 2 of which definitely from polishing. The other to concave areas look man-made although there is some weathering and vegetation damage is evident.
A magnificent place of work.
I found a small path going steeply uphill on the right side of the forestry track at the first sharp bend after leaving the car park. (There is another path going right about 10m before this path which traverses, not this one).
The steep path eventually comes out on the forestry track about 20 m from the gate to the field yhe polissoir is in. From there follow you GPS. Not far. My grid reference for this site is
SH 66773 05650.

Llyn Barfog Stone
Date Added: 27th Mar 2024
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: Wales (Gwynedd)
Visited: Yes on 27th Mar 2024

Llyn Barfog Stone submitted by Geraint1 on 28th Mar 2024. This stone at 6520 9864 does have a few neighbours. This one seems a little smaller and is 80%covered in vegetation. There are other smaller stones, all vegetated over, higher up the slope below an outcrop. This stone could possibly be the menhir referred to but the position recorded incorrectly.
I'm undecided whether this stone looks more likely naturally deposited or sited here by human hand.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: This stone may not exist. At the coordinates given there is no stone. There is a stone approximately 40m west from the stated position but this stone does look more likely to be naturally deposited, taking into consideration an adjacent outcrop with many similar sized stones.
There is another possible candidate approximately 40m south of the stated position. This stone does look as though it may possibly be a standing stone. This stone is at the path 'T' junction. There is another stone of similar size approximately 10m to its east that is covered in vegetation. There are several more smaller stones below an adjacent outcrop. It does look as though it could have become deposited naturally, although equally it could have been stood there. I'll upload a couple of pics of this stone given it does seem a more likely candidate for being this particular menhir but it may well be just another stone.
