Bretsch Steingrab 3

Bretsch Steingrab 3 submitted by holger_rix on 21st Aug 2012. Long Barrow with Chambered Tomb in Saxony-Anhalt A 32 x 7m rectangle shaped Long Barrow. 32 of the kerbstones are still there, most of them fallen and out of place. In the east, there are two pretty big flat stones; most likely former capstones of the tomb. One of them has about 27 cupmarks. The tomb in the middle of the barrow has been set up with five orthostats on each long side. Chambers size 6 x 1.8 x 1.5m. One original capstone has sunken down, fragments of another...

Log Text: I could only find this thanks to the coördinates and my phone, there's no signs and it's quite far into the woods. Almost completely overgrown. It felt like quite an achievement to have found it.

Kettelstorf Steingrab 2

Kettelstorf Steingrab 2 submitted by holger_rix on 13th Jul 2009. Destroyed Chambered Tomb in the remains of an 18m diameter tumulus, just some 1m high. The remaining stones don't show a recognizable structure.

Log Text: Again a site from which it was very difficult to figure out what was there originally. Quite difficult to reach, in the woods right next to a cornfield. Between this site and the field was a deep pit, probably dug for animals to drink and get shot by hunters. Were the stones moved for this drinking pond? It also looked like some stones were added, probably dug out of the cornfield. It would be quite a job to figure out what is authentic, it looks totally different from Sprockhoff’s drawings. Is there any protection of sites like this?

Kettelstorf Steingrab 3

Kettelstorf Steingrab 3 submitted by holger_rix on 12th Jul 2009. Possible remains of a megalithic tomb. Marked as 'Stone Tomb' on the topo map. This area is interesting. A lot of typical lengthy mounds, with even more typical remains of robbed graves, some single bolders here and there. Source: Niedersachsen Bremen 3D v1.5 DVD

Log Text: It was quite hard to figure out what could be some prehistoric remains. The site is next to a farmer’s field and looks like a dump, with old tires and so on. Like on more sites the farmers use this one to dump stones which they find in their cropfields, making it very difficult to see what the original site was like. And it seems the largest stone was worked on in modern times, with attempts to split it. It is unclear if this one has any official status or protection.

Kettelstorf Steingrab 1

Kettelstorf Steingrab 1 submitted by holger_rix on 6th Aug 2007. Overgrown tomb in a forest near Kettelstorf. One mighty stone is visible, the others are in the ground.

Log Text: A few hundred meters from the path next to the wood, you can see a small barrow with several visible stones. There’s a small pit in the middle, obviously there was some illegal digging.

Kettelstorf Steinkreis

Date Added: 10th Sep 2023

Kettelstorf Steinkreis

Kettelstorf Steinkreis submitted by holger_rix on 13th Jul 2009. According to Sprockhoff, a circle of headsized stones, not megalithic. In 1853 this circle was aquired by v. Estorff to safe it for the future. Nowadays the place looks like a flat tumulus, those stones seem to be deep in the ground, overgrown. Just a lonely wooden pole with a satanic cross gives the place a somewhat strange aura. Source: Niedersachsen Bremen 3D v1.5 DVD and Sprockhoff, E. Atlas der Megalithgraeber Deutschlands, Niedersachsen-Westfalen

Log Text: There’s quite some stones visible now, but it’s not clear wether they are original or just dumped there by the farmer who is using the field behind it to grow corn. Hunters used the tumulus to build a hunting blind. The “satanic cross” is gone now. I don’t know in how far this site was registered and documented before, otherwise it is very difficult to figure out what it originally looked like.

Log Text: Three years ago I visited this nice open air museum and saw a very enthusiastic group of volunteers from both sides of the border running this place. It was a very pleasant and interesting visit and good to see how devoted these people were in experimenting with different techniques. Check their website for opening hours, definitely worth a visit!

Site Type: Round Barrow(s) Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Jul 2022. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Log Text: The barrows appear quite damaged, a lot of people have been digging here. Not surprising, since in 1840 a golden cup was found in a barrow nearby (Gölenkamp). The prehistoric well is really there, I found it in the middle of a cornfield, could not get very near to it though, because of nettles. All in all an interesting short visit.
