Knossos submitted by Thorgrim on 12th Nov 2004. The Minoan Palace of Knossos, Crete. Dating from the Minoan Bronze Age, the first palace was built around 2000BC and subsequently destroyed by earthquake. This later palace from the Neopalatial period had 1,200 rooms on five levels. In 1450 BC, it too was destroyed in a disaster caused by the volcanic eruption on Thera (Santorini) which destroyed that island and the Minoan civilisation. The restoration is by Sir Arthur Evans who commenced excavation in 1900.

Elevation 122 Meters.
East-West orientation.
Egypt was the bread basket of Rome and Trajan was very eager to maintain good relations with the Egyptians when he built this charming enclosure in 105 CE. It was probably used as a resting place for visiting dignitaries. The reliefs show Trajan offering paying his respects to Isis, Osiris and Horus.
This structure was also saved from its watery resting place in the late 70s, well after all the other Nubi...

Khafre's Pyramid submitted by Thorgrim on 13th Feb 2005. The most awesome experience is to enter the Pyramid of Khafre at Giza. Is it just a coincidence that Giza is located exactly 30 degrees and zero minutes from the equator? (Cairo is 30 degrees 1 minute North) Just think about it - some time before 2,500 BC, the Egyptians of the Old Kingdom placed the Sphinx and the great pyramids exactly one third of the way up from the equator and two thirds of the way down from the north pole. With all that space to go at - it must have been deliberate and pro...

Kaymakli Underground City submitted by Flickr on 26th Nov 2015. Passageway in the underground city of Kaymakli, Cappodocia, Turkey
Cappadocia is one of the prettiest areas of Turkey - rich in scenery and in history. About 1600 years ago, Christians fled the Romans and then Muslims and hid in this area - often in underground cities - absolutely fascinating. The natural scenery is also unique - laced with volcanos and looking like the surface of the moon. The rock formations are called Fairy Chimneys - very impressive. I took these photos in October 2008....
