Ugarit Palace submitted by AlexHunger on 8th Jan 2007. Remains of King's Palace Courtyard. The king did a lot of the business deals himself. Foreign traders or dignitaries were received at the palace. Discussions were held at the pool while scribes etched and baked contracts on clay tablets on the spot.
Ancient Cananite city destroyed by the invasion of the Sea People around 1185 BCE.
The people of Ugarit invented one of the first Alphabets and controled trade from Crete and Cyprus to Mesopotamia and Egypt.

Dura-Europos submitted by AlexHunger on 13th Jan 2007. Secondary Gate. Originally Seleucid City on the Wst bank of the EUphrates. Found in the 4th century BCE, Dura-Europos was finally conquered by the Sassanids (fom the current Iran) around 258 CE.
Note the 2 km long town wall on the western side. On the eastern side, the town is protected by the Euphrates and a cliff.
