Morestead Warren

Morestead Warren submitted by JimChampion on 6th Apr 2006. A peek over the hedge at what remains of this long barrow near Warren Farm. A low long mound can be seen in the field to the right - the slight profile can be made out against the hedge and fence. This picture is just for the record!

Monument to a Horse

Monument to a Horse submitted by JimChampion on 28th Jun 2006. The largest of the standing tetralithons, and the one that many people notice as they hurtle past on the A272. At this time of year it is almost hidden by the surrounding nettles on the verge of the road.

Mizmaze submitted by JimChampion on 23rd Jan 2005. January 2005. Composite image. The information board at the site says that the maze is unlikely to have existed before the 17th century. Behind the maze, the original entrance to the St Catherine's Hill hillfort is visible as a gap in the ramparts.

Middle Hill

Middle Hill submitted by JimChampion on 24th Apr 2007. View southeast towards Middle Hill from the footpath on Battlesbury Hill. The row of white-topped posts indicates a cutting which contains a 'tank road' between the Warminster Training Centre and the Imber Range.

Merry Maidens (Circle) submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Composite image of this popular stone circle, looking east. There were several visitors to the site on this pleasant summer afternoon, but none were standing near the stones when I took these pictures.

Men Scryfa

Men Scryfa submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The inscribed side of the stone, obliquely illuminated by the setting sun. The inscription stands out reasonably clearly but you'll still need to use your imagination a bit to see "RIALOBRANI CUNOVALI FILI".

Mayon Cliff cairn

Mayon Cliff cairn

Mayon Cliff cairn submitted by JimChampion on 31st Aug 2008. The cairn on Mayon Cliff, not listed as a scheduled monument by English Heritage. It is in fairly bad condition, but still recognisable on this exposed headland where the elements and visitor pressure keep the vegetation right down. The island in the distance is the Brisons and Cape Cornwall can be seen poking in from the right.

Maumbury Rings

Maumbury Rings

Maumbury Rings submitted by JimChampion on 28th Dec 2006. A low viewpoint makes the eastern side of the henge entrance look a bit Silbury-like. Very overcast and not a good day for taking pictures of this large grassy earthwork. The size of the bank is not a good indication of its original height - it was greatly added to when the Romans converted the henge into an amphitheatre.

Martin's Down Bell Barrows

Visited: Yes on 27th Apr 2005

Martin's Down Bell Barrows

Martin's Down Bell Barrows submitted by JimChampion on 27th Apr 2005. April 2005. The bowl barrow at grid ref SY570910, with its friend the OS trig point (a modern standing stone?) and The Knoll (near Pucknowle) in the mist in the distance. Taken whilst squatting in the ditch of the cross dyke that separates this promontory off from the rest of Martin's Down. This small round barrow is only 50m SW of the SW end of the Long Bredy bank barrow - most of the nearby round barrows are found nearer the other end of the bank barrow.

Maiden Castle Barrow Cemetery

Maiden Castle Barrow Cemetery submitted by JimChampion on 26th Jul 2005. Looking north at the most prominent barrow of the cemetery, from the edge of the Maiden Castle visitors' car park. The barrow can also be seen from the nearby Dorchester by-pass, a few weeks earlier I was passing by and the barrow seemed to be stood amid a sea of blue cornflower.

Maiden Castle (Dorset)

Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Maiden Castle (Dorset)

Maiden Castle (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Looking west along the southern flank of this impressive hillfort, towards the Hardy Monument. The ditches are not as deep as they once were, and the ramparts were once topped with wooden pallisades. These formiddable defences forced the Roman army to take the slightly 'easier' option of attacking via the south-eastern entrance.

Maen Castle

Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Aug 2008

Maen Castle

Maen Castle submitted by JimChampion on 31st Aug 2008. The name "Maen" Castle is from the Cornish for 'stone', and that describes it quite well. This exposed granite headland has many boulders and outcrops, and the promontory fort has little room for occupation. It is thought to be associated with field systems on the slope immediately to the east. The headland in the distance is Dr Syntax's Head at Land's End, with the Longships rocks and lighthouse offshore.

Lugden Barrow submitted by JimChampion on 23rd Jul 2007. Two-photo composite image of Lugden Barrow - the "vague mound" is in there somewhere beneath the gorse and heather. The pine trees beyond are part of the Dur Hill Inclosure.
