Lanyon Quoit
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Portal Tomb
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Lanyon Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2002. Late afternoon sunshine gives a pleasant colour to this picture-postcard quoit in West Penwith. The almost-horizontal capstone gives a very ordered feel to this monument: is this an artifact of the nineteenth-century rebuilding?

Maiden Castle (Dorset)
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Maiden Castle (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Looking west along the southern flank of this impressive hillfort, towards the Hardy Monument. The ditches are not as deep as they once were, and the ramparts were once topped with wooden pallisades. These formiddable defences forced the Roman army to take the slightly 'easier' option of attacking via the south-eastern entrance.

Mulfra Quoit
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Portal Tomb
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Mulfra Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Taken looking west at sunset. We only just made it to the quoit before the sun set, but were rewarded with spectacular ambience. Running up the bracken-covered hillside from the Try Vally, the quoit was hidden from view until we got very close to it. A lot of anticipation, capped by a pleasant surprise. Its not obvious where to park for access from the Try Valley, there is a shallow lay-by at SW454356.

Tregeseal East
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Tregeseal East submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Composite image. The granite outcrop of Carn Kenidjack towers over this pleasant stone circle. This is a very wide open landscape and the Dancing stones seem very small in it. The variety of colours in the landscape are amazing at this time of year.

Wayland's Smithy submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. December 2004. This barrow has a somewhat sinister air, surrounded by leafless trees on a gloomy winter's day. The barrow itself is remarkably long, as can be seen in this photo, and is flanked by small upright stones.

For access, park just off the "Bishops road" at SY587866 (where it has a sharp bend) and walk the SW coast path towards the east. Excellent views.

Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jan 2005

Abbotsbury Castle submitted by JimChampion on 1st Jan 2005. December 2004. Looking east from the trig point on top of Abbotsbury hillfort. The hillfort's round tumulus is in the centre of the picture, with a person for scale. At a height of 215m above sea-level you get an impressive view of the surroundings: it is obvious why this site was chosen for a hillfort.

Pudding Barrow
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Hampshire)
Visited: Yes on 8th Jan 2005

Pudding Barrow submitted by JimChampion on 8th Jan 2005. January 2005. Looking south towards the Pudding Barrow. The new fence and barrier is clearly visible. The campsite is closed to vehicles in winter, but many walkers and cyclists passing by, and even one person on a scrambler motorbike. Presumably the fence is a deterrent to wheeled enthusiasts.
