Site Type: Cairn
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 25th Aug 2005

Tredinney Cairn submitted by JimChampion on 25th Aug 2005. Looking south at the cairn from the footpath across Tredinney Common. In the distance is the ever-present tower of St Buryan's church. Nice enough view from here, but I imagine its a pretty blustery place for most of the year.

Sancreed Well
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Sep 2006

Sancreed Well submitted by JimChampion on 2nd Sep 2006. There are now two paths to Sancreed Well, this is the end of the older path which approaches from the southeast. The shiny iron railings are part of the landscaping work that took place in the late 19th century when the well and chapel were 'rediscovered' by the vicar of Sancreed. I supposed the remoteness of this site meant that the railings weren't taken for the "War effort" as in so many other places in the U.K. Behind the ferns is a large rectangular moulded fragment of a doorway which has ...

Giant's Rock, Zennor
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 8th Sep 2006

Giant's Rock, Zennor submitted by JimChampion on 8th Sep 2006. August 2006. View of the Giant's Rock, taken with camera held at arms length above head height. The right of way that leads to the rock from the village of Zennor is an unusual dead-end bridleway. The last 20 metres (or so) is now an impassable mass of brambles and bushes, preventing you from getting anywhere near the rock.

Bosullow Quoit
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 12th Sep 2006

Bosullow Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 12th Sep 2006. This quoit-style roadside sculpture is much smaller than the ancient quoits found in its neighbourhood. The low angle makes it look bigger, and also hides the adjacent roads from view.

The Hurlers Pipers
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Oct 2006

The Hurlers Pipers submitted by JimChampion on 31st Oct 2006. August 2006, on a rainy afternoon close by the Hurlers stone circle. The Pipers in monochrome, since the natural colours were so desaturated anyway. A very exposed location. Cornish folklore question: Why would you have pipers at a hurling game?

Dry Tree Menhir
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 15th Aug 2007

Dry Tree Menhir submitted by JimChampion on 15th Aug 2007. A low-angle view of the menhir, in its gorsey surroundings. I didn't previously know that this was here, but earlier in the day we'd been on the tour of the neighbouring Goonhilly Earth Station (a bit expensive for a lot of BT hype, but you can get buy-one-get-one-free vouchers from various leaflets and local papers) and on the bus tour of the site the guide pointed out the menhir and the surrounding round barrows.

Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 15th Aug 2007

Prospidnick Menhir submitted by JimChampion on 15th Aug 2007. Looking towards the south-west at the Long Stone (or Prospidnick Menhir). The stone is illuminated by evening sunshine through a convenient break in the clouds. The last few miles to this spot involved an interesting drive down very narrow Cornish lanes.

Trethevy Quoit
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 15th Aug 2007

Trethevy Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 15th Aug 2007. Two-photo composite image of Trethevy Quoit. I was surprised to find that the quoit was right next to a row of houses, probably for two reasons. One - the other quoits I'd visited (in West Penwith) were all in fairly remote locations. Two - all the photographs I'd previously seen of it had been carefully composed in order to avoid or hide the houses. Here it is in all its back-garden glory.

Visited: Yes on 15th Aug 2007

Nine Stones (Altarnun) submitted by JimChampion on 15th Aug 2007. Three of the stones in the south-western quadrant of this restored stone circle. The deep puddles are in holes created by cattle that use the stones as scratching posts - there aren't many trees or fences out here on East Moor.

The Hurlers
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 16th Aug 2007

The Hurlers submitted by JimChampion on 16th Aug 2007. Stones in the southern part of the central stone circle on a very agreeable summer's afternoon. The concrete setting of one is clearly visible. If you approach the stone circles along the well-worn path from the car park then these are the first three standing stones that you come across. In the distance the old engine house is home to the Minions Heritage Centre.
