Lescudjack Castle

Lescudjack Castle submitted by JimChampion on 31st Aug 2008. From Trengwainton Carn there are splendid views across Mounts Bay. I took this photo, ostensibly of St Michael's Mount, using my camera's maximum zoom from the sunny but windy summit of Trengwainton Carn. Upon closer inspection later on, I found that I had inadvertently photographed Lescudjack Castle in Penzance - it lies roughly half way between The Mount and Trengwainton Carn. In this photo the hillfort is the area lit by direct sunlight in the centre left of the photo. For a version of this p...

Mayon Cliff cairn

Mayon Cliff cairn submitted by JimChampion on 31st Aug 2008. The cairn on Mayon Cliff, not listed as a scheduled monument by English Heritage. It is in fairly bad condition, but still recognisable on this exposed headland where the elements and visitor pressure keep the vegetation right down. The island in the distance is the Brisons and Cape Cornwall can be seen poking in from the right.

Grey Mare and her Colts

Grey Mare and her Colts submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. Boxing Day 2004. Taken at noon over the wall/fence to the north of the barrow. One of several small concrete posts that surround the site is visible, presumably there to prevent any further ploughing of the monument. The arrangment of stones is like a smaller, more ramshackle, Waylands Smithy.

Kingston Russell Circle

Kingston Russell Circle submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. Boxing Day 2004. Composite image, taken shortly after noon looking south-west. The field is currently being used as pasture, which means that access is muddy but at least the circle is not lost in crops. Lyme bay can be seen in the distance, and Abbotsbury hill-fort to the left of this.

Maiden Castle (Dorset)

Maiden Castle (Dorset)

Maiden Castle (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Looking west along the southern flank of this impressive hillfort, towards the Hardy Monument. The ditches are not as deep as they once were, and the ramparts were once topped with wooden pallisades. These formiddable defences forced the Roman army to take the slightly 'easier' option of attacking via the south-eastern entrance.

Nine Stones (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. Boxing Day 2004. Composite image. A bright sunny morning, but the trees keep this little circle in the shade. Only eight stones are visible: the ninth is being engulfed by the roots of the large beech tree on the left of the picture.

Hampton Down

Hampton Down submitted by JimChampion on 1st Jan 2005. December 2004. The stones are disappearing from sight! Finding the circle in this state was an anticlimax after the splendid views from Hampton Down towards the sea. For access, park just off the "Bishops road" at SY587866 (where it has a sharp bend) and walk the SW coast path towards the east. Excellent views.

Abbotsbury Castle

Abbotsbury Castle submitted by JimChampion on 1st Jan 2005. December 2004. Looking east from the trig point on top of Abbotsbury hillfort. The hillfort's round tumulus is in the centre of the picture, with a person for scale. At a height of 215m above sea-level you get an impressive view of the surroundings: it is obvious why this site was chosen for a hillfort.

Hambledon Hill hillfort

Hambledon Hill hillfort submitted by JimChampion on 10th Jan 2005. December 2002. Looking towards the south at the impressive west-facing flank of Hambledon hill. The ramparts are clearly visible in this picture, and the grazing sheep give a sense of scale. The ramparts in the foreground drop away sharply - presumably as the result of a landslip.

Nettlecombe Tout submitted by JimChampion on 1st Feb 2005. January 2005. Looking southwest along the top of the rampart. The ditch is to the left and the fort is to the right. This end of the bank has recently been cleared of trees, but the rest of it is still fairly densely covered. The interior of the fort is grazed by sheep.
