Mizmaze

Mizmaze submitted by JimChampion on 23rd Jan 2005. January 2005. Composite image. The information board at the site says that the maze is unlikely to have existed before the 17th century. Behind the maze, the original entrance to the St Catherine's Hill hillfort is visible as a gap in the ramparts.

Toothill Camp

Toothill Camp submitted by JimChampion on 23rd Jan 2005. January 2005. Early morning view of Toothill Camp from Hoe Lane to the north. The area is busy with high-voltage electricity lines. The mature redwoods growing on the site are clearly visible, but its not possible to get close enough to see the defences.

Bury Hill (Hampshire)

Bury Hill (Hampshire) submitted by JimChampion on 23rd Jan 2005. January 2005. View looking north from the western portion of the ditch between the two ramparts. The ditch is wide and deep, with plenty of yew, silver birch and beech trees. The ditch on the eastern side is less heavily wooded, and churned up by farm machinery. Plenty of wildlife here, but little in the way of pre-historic remains.

Stockbridge Down field boundary submitted by JimChampion on 25th Jan 2005. January 2005. Looking north-east along the bivallate field boundary on Stockbridge down. The earthworks curve to the left, and the south-facing ramparts of Woolbury hillfort can be seen in the distance. The earthworks are well preserved but difficult to photograph, especially on this dim rainy winter afternoon.

Beacon Hill (Burghclere) submitted by JimChampion on 17th Feb 2005. February 2005. Looking at the south-western ditch and rampart on Beacon Hill from the corner occupied by Lord Carnarvon's grave. The earthworks enclose about 12 acres and give the camp an 'hourglass' shape, with the entrance on the southern corner.

Old Winchester Hill hillfort

Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort Country: England (Hampshire)
Visited: Yes on 19th Feb 2005

Old Winchester Hill hillfort

Old Winchester Hill hillfort submitted by JimChampion on 19th Feb 2005. February 2005, looking north at the southern aspect of Old Winchester Hill. The recently-ploughed fields show the underlying chalk in this region. In his ebooklet Andy Barrett suggests that the name of this hillfort is a corruption of the Celtic "Gwynchester" meaning White City, after the appearance of the chalky ramparts when it was first constructed.

Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery

Old Winchester Hill barrow cemetery submitted by JimChampion on 19th Feb 2005. February 2005. View of the rare double-disk barrow (centred on grid reference SU63902059) found just outside the western entrance to the hillfort. The hill is a barrow cemetery as well as a hillfort, and the barrows pre-date the construction of the defences.

Ashurst Lodge Earthworks

Ashurst Lodge Earthworks submitted by JimChampion on 5th Mar 2005. March 2005. Not an easy-to-photograph site. This view shows the ditch on the northern side of the earthworks (that closest the river) which now supports many silver birch and beech trees.

Shirley Holms submitted by JimChampion on 13th Mar 2005. Looking north at one of the bowl barrows in this group of four. In the foreground is a circle about 20m in diameter, worn into the chalky ground. The circle is striking but not pre-historic: most likely to be some kind of pony training circuit.

Clay Hill tumuli

Clay Hill tumuli submitted by JimChampion on 26th Mar 2005. March 2005. Looking north at the bowl barrow at SU235027. Much of the gorse around the barrow has been burned recently, and some of the gorse on the barrow has been cut back manually. The nearby bell barrow is only just recognisable and not at all photogenic.

Longdown (New Forest) tumuli

Longdown (New Forest) tumuli

Longdown (New Forest) tumuli submitted by JimChampion on 28th Mar 2005. A composite image of the bowl barrow at grid ref SU36390822, with Ipley Inclosure in the background. According to Hampshire Treaures this barrow is 9m in diameter, 0.8m high, and has a large crater mutilation. Traces of a ditch are found on the south side (the far side in the picture), noticeable because no heather grows in the ditch.
