The earthworks curve to the left, and the south-facing ramparts of Woolbury hillfort can be seen in the distance. The earthworks are well preserved but difficult to photograph, especially on this dim rainy winter afternoon.

St Joseph's Well

St Joseph's Well submitted by JimChampion on 12th Aug 2006. Just to show that there really is no other angle on this well... I now realise that if I'd turned the camera the other way the flash would have been less intense on the near (left) portion of the arch. Live and learn. Apparently when the well was baled out during an investigation in 1991 they found hundreds of coins dated 1960 and later, which presumably shows when tourist numbers increased dramatically.

These barrows are easy to spot from the road from Martinstown to the Hardy Monument, and there is a gravel layby close by (next to the Forestry Commission's "Blackdown" sign). This view is from the other side of the barrows, walking along the footpath along the ridgeway from Upwey.

Shirley Holms submitted by JimChampion on 13th Mar 2005. Looking north at one of the bowl barrows in this group of four. In the foreground is a circle about 20m in diameter, worn into the chalky ground. The circle is striking but not pre-historic: most likely to be some kind of pony training circuit.

Setley Plain disc barrows

Setley Plain disc barrows submitted by JimChampion on 1st Jan 2006. View looking north of the lone disc barrow at grid ref SU298998 (diameter roughly 30 metres). The earthworks are noticeable on this open expanse of heathland, but not easy to photograph. Here the low winter sun casts shadows that make the ditch and outer bank visible, and also the mutilated central mound with its covering of burnt gorse bushes.
