Inkpen Long Barrow
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Long Barrow
Country: England (Berkshire)
Visited: Yes on 24th Jul 2005

Inkpen Long Barrow submitted by JimChampion on 24th Jul 2005. A view of the east end of the barrow against the backdrop of rainclouds on a showery summer afternoon. The macarbe double-gibbet makes the site easy to find from the valley below. The erosion due to people walking the length of the barrow is visible in this picture: the info board says that various measures have been taken to try and limit wear and tear by the visitors to this great viewpoint.

Chun Quoit
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Chambered Cairn
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Chun Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Looking East, towards Chun castle (which can be seen the the left of the quoit). Impressive lichen on this side of the quoit. Recent rainfall meant that the chamber within was one big muddy puddle.

Chysauster
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Chysauster submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Looking West from the settlement site, with the engine-house of the Ding Dong mine visible on the horizon. The site is incredibly well-kept, with just a few visitors late on this bright summer afternoon. Disappointing to find that the fogou has been blocked up for 'safety' reasons.

Gun Rith
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Gun Rith submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. The stone is still standing upright, with its base neatly set in concrete with a tidy wall supporting the earth bank behind. This may help to prevent toppling, but does give the site the ambience of a contemporary structure. About 3.5m tall, it is a particularly phallic menhir.

Lanyon Quoit
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Portal Tomb
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Lanyon Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2002. Late afternoon sunshine gives a pleasant colour to this picture-postcard quoit in West Penwith. The almost-horizontal capstone gives a very ordered feel to this monument: is this an artifact of the nineteenth-century rebuilding?

Mulfra Quoit
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Portal Tomb
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Mulfra Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Taken looking west at sunset. We only just made it to the quoit before the sun set, but were rewarded with spectacular ambience. Running up the bracken-covered hillside from the Try Vally, the quoit was hidden from view until we got very close to it. A lot of anticipation, capped by a pleasant surprise. Its not obvious where to park for access from the Try Valley, there is a shallow lay-by at SW454356.

Tregeseal East
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Tregeseal East submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Composite image. The granite outcrop of Carn Kenidjack towers over this pleasant stone circle. This is a very wide open landscape and the Dancing stones seem very small in it. The variety of colours in the landscape are amazing at this time of year.

Visited: Yes on 2nd Jan 2005

Trencrom submitted by JimChampion on 2nd Jan 2005. Dusk, 20 August 2004. Visible for many miles around, Trencrom hill is an excellent spot for a hillfort. It affords views of the north and south coasts of the Penwith Peninsular.

Chun Castle
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 13th May 2005

Chun Castle submitted by JimChampion on 13th May 2005. August 2004. Looking out from the gateway of Chun Castle, with Chun quoit in the middle distance (to the left of the engine house) and Pendeen church in the distance. This photo was taken just after I was caught in the Cornish rain here: there's no shelter nearby.

Zennor Quoit
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Portal Tomb
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Aug 2005

Zennor Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. Just before the sun sets behind the granite outcrops of Zennor Hill, the enormous slipped capstone of Zennor Quoit is illuminated with a golden glow. This image is actually a composite of two photos - from this low angle the nearby wall prevented me from going far enough back to get everything in the frame in one go.

Men Scryfa
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Early Christian Sculptured Stone
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Aug 2005

Men Scryfa submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The inscribed side of the stone, obliquely illuminated by the setting sun. The inscription stands out reasonably clearly but you'll still need to use your imagination a bit to see "RIALOBRANI CUNOVALI FILI".

Boskednan stone circle
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Aug 2005

Boskednan stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The portal stones illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun. The tallest one (on the left) has a diagonal groove present on this and the opposite side. The holes that the restored stones were raised from have been covered with pegged down foliage, presumably to encourage regrowth on the bare earth.

Gurnard's Head
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Aug 2005

Gurnard's Head submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. Looking inland (south) towards Treen from high on the rocky outcrop of the Gurnard's Head promontory. The narrowest part of the promontory, and thus the most easily defended, has a ditch and bank with drystone wall. The ends of this are indicated by white arrows, just showing up as a dark line on this bright afternoon.
