Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 14th Jul 2007

Anderlingen Steinkistengrab (Hannover) submitted by JimChampion on 14th Jul 2007. A reconstructed dolmen outside the Niedersächsischen Landesmuseum, central Hannover. It was originally discovered during sand extraction near Anderlingen, and moved here for public display. It was originally covered by an earth mound, 25 metres in diameter and 2 metres high. It is most famous for containing a stone with three human figures carved into it - Anderlingen's coat of arms features a representation of this carved stone.

Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Yorkshire (North))
Visited: Yes on 7th Dec 2007
High Bridestones (Yorks) submitted by JimChampion on 7th Dec 2007. August 2007. The High Bridestones, on the moor. Just one of the megaliths is still standing, with small change firmly wedged into its many crevices. A megalithic shambles indeed. The heather in bloom says that it is summer, although the temperature (and wind) on this day was more like winter!

The beacon sculpture on the barrow was erected the Danby Beacon Trust in 2008, and first lit on the anniversary of Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. The top of Beacon Hill, beyond the barrow, was the site of a major Second World War radar station.

Figsbury Rings
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 23rd Jan 2005

Figsbury Rings submitted by JimChampion on 23rd Jan 2005. January 2005. Looking at the NE section of the ramparts from within the rings. The highest portion of the rampart is visible behind the ash trees growing in the inner ditch. These are the only significant trees within the rings, which are now grazed to conserve the chalk grassland habitat. The red flag is a warning that the neighbouring MOD range is in use. From the ring you get an amazing view of the MOD's impact on the modern landscape north-east of Salisbury.

Stonehenge. submitted by JimChampion on 4th Apr 2005. 4 April 2005: like something from "The Birds" huge numbers of starlings swoop around Stonehenge and settle on the stones. Some birds of the crow family (not sure which ones) are busy making their nests in holes in the trilithons.

Clearbury Ring submitted by JimChampion on 31st May 2006. Southwest ditch and rampart (right) at Clearbury, from grid ref SU15232432. The ramparts were planted with beech trees long ago, as was the fashion to "improve the aspect" of prominent landmarks. Clearbury is a univallate hillfort, meaning that it has a single ditch and bank.

Whitsbury Down submitted by JimChampion on 26th Oct 2006. The barrow is separated from a byway by a high hedge and this is all I could see leaning over the fence. The view is along the back of the barrow. To get a better view one would need to revisit when the crop has been harvested.

Cley Hill submitted by JimChampion on 16th Apr 2007. A three-photo composite of Cley Hill, from "Little Cley Hill" to the northeast, connected to the main hill by a saddle. This is an impressive piece of geomorphology, a chalk outlier of Salisbury Plain, with some human-added trimmings (the ramparts, lynchets and barrows).
