Uragh SW

Visited: Yes on 1st Feb 2013. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 3

Uragh SW

Uragh SW submitted by KenWilliams on 13th Feb 2007. This is a wonderful little circle, though large compared to Uragh NE. Situated on a small terrace enclosed by trees and outcrops it feels very private and there are evidently frequent gatherings by people lighting fires in the middle of the circle. Not easy to find, bloody awful to get back to the car from in the dark...

Derrynablaha

Date Added: 23rd Feb 2018
Site Type: Rock Art Country: Ireland (Republic of) (Co. Kerry)
Visited: Yes on 1st Feb 2013. My rating: Condition 1 Ambience 5 Access 4

Derrynablaha

Derrynablaha submitted by frogcottage42 on 20th Mar 2010. This represents the most basic sort of rock art. There are about forty shallow indentations on the top of this slab but they are very weathered.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Many examples of rock art from very clear to almost erased/obscured. Large scattered site that is well worth a visit or preferably more than one if you want explore this area.
A superb setting easily accessed initially before requiring rock scrambling and hunting on both sides of the road.

Derrynafinchin

Date Added: 24th Sep 2015
Site Type: Stone Circle Country: Ireland (Republic of) (Co. Cork)
Visited: Yes on 8th Dec 2012. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 5 Access 5

Derrynafinchin

Derrynafinchin submitted by frogcottage42 on 4th Mar 2010. This is actually a very complete circle, it is so close to the road that two stones have been uprooted and dropped into the circle to allow traffic to pass! A fence bisects the site and the other stones are hidden in the gorse. There is parking nearby
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I pass close by frequently. Always give acknowledgement to it. A pity it is so close to the tared road and that the gorse encroaches so much. A lovely drive across the mountains from Kilgarvan though.

Gurteen stone circle

Date Added: 19th Sep 2015
Site Type: Stone Circle Country: Ireland (Republic of) (Co. Kerry)
Visited: Yes on 1st Dec 2012. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 4

Gurteen stone circle

Gurteen stone circle submitted by BrethynDa on 28th Aug 2002. Gurteen Stone Circle SW of Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry. Portal stones at NW. Accessible by foot after a 10-minute drive from Kilgarvan. Ask for directions at O'Suilleabhain's Pub in the village. Note to visitors: if you find yourself in a farmyard with three ferocious dogs, you've gone too far. Go back down the hill and look for the metal gate on the right. The circle is on a small hill beyond the gate.

Log Text: Recent work with a large digger (currently still on site) within a few metres of the circle detracts from the site at present. Also much rampant gorse pushing up around the outer stones. Still a site well worth visiting though.

Lomanagh holy well

Lomanagh holy well submitted by KaiHofmann on 20th Sep 2012. Holy well in Kerry. Still in use with modern Christian offerings.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Easily accessed and located from the main road. Travelling west there is a pull in on the left with a sign to the well. A few minuets walk on the footpath leads you to this well which seems to be well visited judging by the offerings of all types. Well worth a visit. I stop by from time to time when I am in the area.

Log Text: I know this site well and am pleased to see it here as it is my first new site addition to Megalithic Portal. Condition is somewhere between 2 and 3. A steep climb up from Bantry Riding (excellent riding centre) but well worth it. The views across Bantry Bay are superb and a climb to the top is well worth it too, if you still have the energy!

Grime's Graves Flint Mines submitted by Thorgrim on 8th Jun 2004. Galleries radiate out from the bottom of the mine shaft in search of the top quality "floorstone" flint. They are only two or three feet high and would have been a tight squeeze

Don the provided hard hat and decend the shaft to view side shafts and artefacts. The surrounding area, with other shafts, either marked or filled, can we rambled on at leasure throughout the year.

Rath Lugh

Rath Lugh submitted by Andy B on 23rd Mar 2008. Rath Lugh is listed as a promontory fort. It is clearly a very massive and impressive monument, built onto a natural feature. As well as giant rings, the hill also appears to contain a mound, possibly a motte or passage-tomb.

Blocc and Bluigne submitted by McDeil on 8th Jan 2002. These two stones are inside the churchyard at the Hill of Tara. Obviously they pre-date the church. Strange that they allowed pagan stones to remain within their hallowed grounds?
