St. Brigid's Holy Well

Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: Ireland (Republic of) (Co. Clare)
Visited: Yes on 7th Oct 2024. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 5

St. Brigid's Holy Well submitted by enkidu41 on 24th May 2004. St. Brigid's Holy Well, Liscannor. R 044900
The Burren in Co. Clare has scores of holy wells not all of which have stood the test of time. Some are cased in concrete with modern plastic pipes extruding from the casing whilst others have disappeared under the vegetation. This well is probably the most important exception and is stated as being "one of the three most strongly lasting survivals of Lughnasa". This is a shot down the curved passage to the well proper at the end.

Date Added: 17th Jul 2024
Site Type: Passage Grave
Country: Netherlands (Drenthe)
Visited: Yes on 6th Jul 2024. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

D15 Loon submitted by Martin_L on 26th Jan 2011. Oblique pole aerial view* from the SE. The impressive 5 capstone passage-grave has preserved most stones of its oval enclosure appr. (16,5m by 10m). Most of them are fallen. The 9,6m [1] chambers' megalithic skeleton is largely in situ except for the central capstone C3, that was partly robbed in historic times. As at several other sites in Drenthe the westernmost capstone is the largest.
*Foreground slightly stretched in this one as a result of wide-angle lens

Date Added: 17th Jul 2024
Site Type: Passage Grave
Country: Netherlands (Drenthe)
Visited: Yes on 6th Jul 2024. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 4

D17 Rolde submitted by Martin_L on 9th Nov 2009. View from the North. The capstones partly collapsed into the chamber. Probably a result of historic destruction attempts and the removal of all smaller stones and the dry walling. Nevertheless a very impressive site. The nearby site D18 is visible in the background. This one's a monster and in stunning condition. Easy to find, too, though I'd imagine on a nice day crawling with picnickers.
