Grotte de Bernifal submitted by TheCaptain on 13th Jan 2011. This cave was discovered in 1905 and contains engravings of humans as well as the more usual animals. It was closed to visitors when I visited in May 2005, but nevertheless it was a nice walk through splendid woodland with a little stream running nearby up to the entrance.

Grotte de Bara-Bahau submitted by TheCaptain on 13th Jan 2011. This cave (cave of the bears), which was only discovered in 1951, features many engravings dated to 14000 years ago and also many bear claw marks. Up the hillside and well signposted from Le Bugue it was closed for lunch when I visited!

Egypt was the bread basket of Rome and Trajan was very eager to maintain good relations with the Egyptians when he built this charming enclosure in 105 CE. It was probably used as a resting place for visiting dignitaries. The reliefs show Trajan offering paying his respects to Isis, Osiris and Horus. Temple of Emhotep N24.02514 E32.88425 This small square chapel is located to the south-east of the main Philae temple between the colonnade and Trajan's Kiosk. Emhotep was originaly the architect of Jozer who built the stepped pyramid at Saqquara. Later he was deified as he was seen as a favourite of Thoth. Eventually he became an Egyptian version of Aesclaepsius, the healing god.

Temple of Khnum, Esna

Temple of Khnum, Esna submitted by AlexHunger on 4th Jan 2006. Front of the Esana Temple of Knuhm. This temple was largely constructed by the Ptolemeys but all the reliefs were finished by the Romans. The temple was largely buried under the town and some parts still remain buried. It is unique in that all the columns in the Hypostyle hall are different. Also, cartouches for most Roman emperors from Tiberius to Caracalla can be found carved on the temple.
