Log Text: This remnant of an ancient monument has at least been saved, however it is a sad reminder of Man's lack of respect for ancient stones.

Aspers Field

Aspers Field

Aspers Field submitted by baz on 26th Apr 2003. This stone (at NY558152) lies in the next field to the more well known Goggleby Stone (NY559151), from which I took this picture (with zoom). Both of these stones form a part of the Shap Stone Avenue.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I have mixed feelings about the Shap stones. I am grateful for the stones that have been preserved but I regret that Shap Avenue has been effectively dismantled. I would love to have seen the avenue as it was meant to have been seen.

The Galloway Stone

The Galloway Stone

The Galloway Stone submitted by Anne T on 3rd Apr 2017. Looking south east over the Galloway Stone to the hills beyond.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It nice to find a site that you don't have to walk 3 miles over moorland to visit.
The Galloway Stone is just such a site. Simply leave the M6 at Shap, turn L for Orton, then take the R turn to Salterwath just before the M6 underpass.
The Galloway Stone lies c. 50 yards to the L after 150 yards along this lane.
It looks like a large chunk of Shap Pink Granite so it can't be an erratic from Galloway.
The explanation for it's name may be that it was a marker on the Old Scotch Drove Road for turning onto the Galwaithegate or Galloway Road.
As an additional point of interest there is an Ordnance Survey Bench Mark Bolt on The Galloway Stone denoting a height of 98.8m.

Gamelands

Date Added: 20th Jul 2022

Gamelands

Gamelands submitted by drolaf on 15th Aug 2020. View of Gamelands from just up the hill. From here you can also still see the cairns at Raisbeck.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This ruined stone circle has a presence greater than its physical footprint. It has no typical standing stones but the N half is well delineated as is the S Arc. The location reminded me of Drummore Stone Circle near Kirkudbright however the remains of Gamelands Stone Circle are more impressive.

The Giant's Foot (Cumbria)

Log Text: A path leading W starts off Shap Main Street between the tennis court and Croft Avenue. After c. 50 yards the path continues SW across a field for c. 120 yards to a junction of dry stane dykes. The path turns SE along a dry stane dyke for c. 50 yards to reach the substantial recumbent Giant's Foot stone.

Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle

Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle submitted by baz on 3rd May 2003. Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle (NY587155). Ten stones form this small stone circle which is now huddled up against a drystone wall, in a field with a locked gate. On the other side of the wall, there appears to be a stone row.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Castlehowe Scar Stone Circle is easy to visit, located adjacent to a minor road to Orton near Shap. This small stone circle consists of an assortment of rounded stones. Despite its stature this site is well worth a visit.

Swinside submitted by AngieLake on 19th Apr 2020. This large block is stone 30 at the South of Swinside circle. It was one of the focal points in a dowse I did there on 19th June 2002, the evening I met Jack Morris Eyton. It was the link with moves 17 and 18 in this plan.

Log Text: It takes time and planning to visit Sunkenkirk Stone Circle. However this stone circle, virtually complete in a beautiful location, more than compensates the effort required.

Andle Stone (Stanton Moor)

Andle Stone (Stanton Moor)

Andle Stone (Stanton Moor) submitted by PaulM on 1st Sep 2001. The Andle Stone, near Doll Tor Stone Circle, Stanton Moor, Derbyshire GR: SK241630 The Andle Stone or Oundle Stone is a dominating outcrop of sandstone, standing alone in the middle of a field, surrounded by a dry-stone wall and a mass of rhododendrons. Approximately 5m high by 4.5m wide, the rock is supposedly carved with ancient cupmarks on the, modern graffiti, a relatively recent inscription and climbing holes on the sides.

Log Text: Arbor Low Henge and Stone Circle are easy to find by following English Heritage signs off the A515 between Buxton and Ashbourne.
Arbor Low Henge is well preserved but can be overshadowed by the circle of recumbent stones in the enclosure. There is some doubt as to whether the stones were ever standing adding mystery to an already impressive site.

Cork Stone

Date Added: 30th Jun 2022
Site Type: Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature Country: England (Derbyshire)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Jan 2009. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Cork Stone

Cork Stone submitted by Vicky on 13th Nov 2001. The Cork Stone, Stanton Moor, Derbyshire GR: SK245628 The Cork Stone is one of a number of impressive natural outcrops on Stanton Moor. Composed of weathered sandstone it resembles a huge mushroom or cork. As with the Andle Stone nearby it is covered in graffiti from the 19th and 20th centuries and has steps carved into the side to allow access to the top.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Additions to a site are normally detrimental however the steps and iron rungs added to the Cork Stone are an exception. The base of the stone is sturdy enough to allow people to climb up to the summit. There is a round rock basin on the flat top of the Cork Stone.
