Log Text: I didn't find any rolling stones (I didn't write the description of this site: I inherited it) but I did find a candidate for a recumbent standing stone on the hillside at NB 17754 34588.

Log Text: The drawback with visiting Callanish in the summer is sharing the stones with lots of people. Seeing the stones in sunlight is a compensation.

Callanish 3

Callanish 3 submitted by Andy B on 13th Nov 2022. Bruce Adams, one of our members since 2012, sadly died last month - he had motor neurone disease. Bruce wrote: "Over the years I have assembled albums recording my visits to stone circles and related sites. I would very much like to pass these on to someone who will appreciate them. I am not asking for payment and only have a desire to see them go to a good home. I would rather not see them broken up and dispersed." I am currently looking after Bruce's albums and will be sharing some of the...

Log Text: For some unknown reason I prefer the simplicity of a small stone circle round a cairn to the complex arrangement of stones at Callanish I. Additionally, there is a greater satisfaction in a solitary visit to Callanish IV.

Log Text: After a yomp over boggy moorland, it was somewhat underwhelming to find three short stones in a line. Maybe I have been spoilt by Cornish stone rows, up to half a mile long, but I struggled to appreciate the significance of Callenish V.

Log Text: I wasn't convinced about the stone circle interpretation: stone circles are usually erected on flat ground. If it was a cairn where did all the stones go? The two standing stones are ill-matched. Callanish VI is a difficult site to interpret.

King Arthur Stone submitted by Maeg on 27th Aug 2012. A view of the 6th century inscribed stone at Slaughterbridge, as seen from the adjacent footpath. The script is both latin and ogham and reads "Latini [h]ic iacit fili Macari" = Latinus son of Macarus lies here. Latinus is thought to have been a local celtic chief (according to Wikipedia at least).
