Log Text: The Great Cursus is a polar opposite of its more famous neighbour, Stonehenge Stone Circle. The Great Cursus blends into the landscape whereas Stonehenge Stone Circle stands out on the plain. If you take the path to the circle from the visitor centre the Great Cursus is visited on the way. The west end of the cursus has an information board in a clearing of the Fargo Plantation.

Log Text: Starting at the Stonehenge visitor centre, take the path E for c. 400 yards. Bear left onto a footpath heading for Fargo Plantation. Go through a gate after c. 400 yards. The Great Cursus starts here bisecting Fargo Plantation. Follow the path E for c. 100 yards to the start of the trees. Great Cursus W Barrow is c. 30 yards N of this point.

Log Text: The Great Cursus Barrows are obvious on the horizon viewed from the stone circle. It is more prominent than the nearby Great Cursus. It's a shame that the majority of visitors to Stonehenge take the bus to and from the stone circle missing out on the less spectacular barrow cemetery and cursus.

A megalithic tragedy.

Log Text: Grand Menhir Brise is one of Locmariaquer's big three sites. It is only accessible via the Site des Megalithes Visitor Centre for 6 euros. To be fair, there are three impressive monuments, unrestricted visiting time and free parking so what's not to like?
Grand Menhir Brise consists of four massive recumbent stones which are though to have been parts of one of the largest ever menhirs, measuring c. 20 metres long. There is speculation as to whether the Grand Menhir Brise either broke on erection or as a result of an earthquake or was deliberately toppled. There is archaeological evidence of 19 socket holes forming a giant stone row, with Grand Menhir Brise as an end stone. Whatever the reality, there is no doubt that the Grand Menhir Brise is an impressive antiquity.

Log Text: I spotted Gowk Nest Wood Cairn on OS Aerial view however it is more difficult to see in situ. The low mound can be best observed on close approach. The site is not spectacular, but it is only a short detour from Mains of Larg Cairns.

Log Text: I found the Gorse Stone by accident when visiting the Cork Stone. It is less impressive than the Cork Stone however it is a bonus to find it adjacent to a path.

Log Text: Glenquicken Stone is located on Glenquicken Moor north of Garrochar Tree Farm. The stone is hard to find in summer due to a sea of ferns. I walked c. 50 yards SSW from the rocky knoll at NX 51610 58608 to find the hidden stone.

Log Text: Giant's Dike Hillfort is easily visited from a trail leading N from Barstobrick Visitor centre. It is easily spotted by heading for the prominent Nielson's Monument on the summit of the hill. The path is muddy in places so stout footwear is advised.

Log Text: Les Géants de Kerzerho are an impressive alignment of massive stones hidden in a grove of trees. They are a mix of massive standing stones, recumbent stones and stone rows. I also found a mysterious round holed stone. Even in Carnac, this site has a unique presence.

Log Text: Géant du Manio is a high and handsome standing stone in Manio Forest. The massive menhir reaches up to 6.5m. It is well sign-posted on a forest path c. 40m ESE of Quadratiere du Manio.

Log Text: I travelled to the Cairn de Gavrinis via a pre-booked trip from Port-Navalo with Le Passeur des Iles on a 20 person boat. The journey to the island took around 20 minutes. There was an organised lecture on the Cairn de Gavrinis in French for around 30 minutes before we were allowed to enter the passage in small groups. We were allowed free access to the passage and chamber, which are lit by subdued lighting, for 5 minutes. There were no restrictions on photography allowing me to take some good pictures of the carved stones in the passage and the chamber. The boat was waiting at the end of the tour. I would recommend this trip though I could have done without the extended lecture in French.

Log Text: Canmore ID 60935 relates the sadly familiar tale of a megalithic site destroyed by modern farming. Only 2 of the original stones remain in the garden of a bungalow called Druidslea, probably named after the stones. The standing stone in the front garden is allegedly in its original position but the second standing stone was moved to the back garden in 1991. Garleffin stones are like caged tigers in a zoo: they shouldn't be subjected to such indignity.

Log Text: This ruined stone circle has a presence greater than its physical footprint. It has no typical standing stones but the N half is well delineated as is the S Arc. The location reminded me of Drummore Stone Circle near Kirkudbright however the remains of Gamelands Stone Circle are more impressive.

Log Text: It is probably easier to park at the junction to Culhorn House rather than take your car down a rough single-track farm road. Galla Hill Mound is not spectacular in its current state, but it is a worthwhile trip nonetheless.

Log Text: There is room to park at the end of Galachlawside cul-de sac. A vague path leads SW into the woods on the edge of the Fairmilehead housing estate. A short clamber up a grassy slope leads to the badly preserved remains of Galachlaw cairn, which lies on a busy woodland path running E-W.

Log Text: Galabraes E Standing Stone is on the left side of the narrow road approaching Cairnpapple Hill. I resolved to visit it on the way back. To paraphrase Charles Dickens, Galabraes is "A Tale of Two Stones": the E Standing Stone is a tall erect slab and the W broken stump on the edge of gorse bushes is a sad remnant of a standing stone. In fact, the gorse bushes are encroaching on W Galabraes stone so don't leave it too long. The condition rating of Galabraes E is 4 and Galabraes W is 2, hence the average rating of 3.
