Log Text: The burial chambers have been artfully placed in the rectory garden in Avening, however, in principle I do not agree with people removing parts of an ancient monument for their own gratification. The original site is devalued and the new site is questionable at best.

Log Text: Avielochan Clava Cairn is sandwiched between the A95 and the railway line. Despite this the site has a peaceful ambience, promoted by the ring of mature trees which surround the cairn. The kerb is delineated by c. 10 trees and intermittent large stones. The interior has been robbed out exposing a stone lined passage to a central chamber.
I prefer this somewhat neglected Clava cairn to the over-restored cairns at Balnuaran.

Log Text: I appreciate that conserving the circle in some way is better than removing it, however, surrounding the circle by a modern housing estate has negated any air of antiquity that the stone circle may have possessed.

Log Text: Barhoise Cairn is not in a great state of preservation. The interior of the the cairn is entirely robbed out with a deposit of field clearance stones dumped on the N quadrant. However it is still recognisably a cairn and worth visiting while in the area.

Standing Stone of Bagbie submitted by vicky on 29th Oct 2002. This single standing stone sits in a field at NX498562 but to the south of, and part of, a complex containing a cairn, four poster stone circle and stone pair.
The Standing Stone of Bagbie is blade-like (as many of the standing stones in this area are) and has no formal access although it can be seen from the lane that runs from the A75(T) in a NE direction in to the hills towards Cambret.

Bagbie Four Poster submitted by PaulM on 29th Oct 2002. This is a small four poster with stones no larger than 1.2m in height. It stands on the NE edge of a cairn and only three or four metres from a similarly sized stone pair. The grid reference is NX49815642.
This area is right on the edge of OS Explorer Map 311 (Wigtown, Whithorn & The Machars) and full navigation will require the next map over (Map 312 - Kirkcudbright & Castle Douglas).

Log Text: Baliehill Fort is located between Lockerbie and Langholm in a rural setting. It is situated atop a steep climb up Camp Hill from a lay-by at NY 25315 90657. The remnants of the forts defenses are visible on the slope of the hill but the enclosures are relatively featureless.

Log Text: Bain's Hill is easy to visit with a good view over Turnberry Golf Course towards Ailsa Craig. Lunch at the Malin Court is also a good reason to stop.

Log Text: Ballagory Horned Cairn is easy to visit. It is situated beside a minor road with a lay-by, surrounded by a low stone wall. There is a style to climb into the enclosure denying disabled access.

Log Text: Ballakelly Chambered Cairn is in a field on the right hand side of the A25 from Douglas. There is a narrow gate to park in on a sharp corner at Ballakelly Farm. The stones are surrounded by a fence with a gate for access. The chamber and its immediately surrounding stones are impressive but the random circle of stones on the fence perimeter dilute the authenticity of the site.

This tall stone is clearly visible from the road to the north of Loch Gorm, but is hidden from view on the path leading in from Saligo Bay. It's worth the walk. There's a second smaller stone in the next square, just visible in the left-hand side of this shot below a rocky outcrop.

Log Text: Ballinaby 1 is unsignposted off a minor road N of Loch Gorm. There is a lay-by c. 200 yards W of Ballinaby farm. Walk up the farm road to a gate, head NNW towards a junction of dry stane dykes. Ballinaby 1 is c. 50 yards SW from here adjacent to the N side of the dyke. Ballinaby 2 lies c.350 yards NNE of Ballinaby 1 across rough ground.
Ballinaby 1 is one of the most striking standing stones I have ever visited. The apparent fragility of this tall thin slab is belied by its survival despite being exposed to Islay's wild weather for millennia.
Ballinaby 2 is less impressive in its current state though it may have been as tall as Ballinaby 1 originally.

Log Text: I have made several visits to Ballochmyle Walls however I have not returned since 2012. I hope that the erosion of the markings has not been significant. Ballochmyle is my favourite Rock Art site due to the scale and variety of markings on the panels. I hope that it has remained relatively obscure because I feel that greater popularity of the site could hasten its demise.

Log Text: Antiquarians are spoiled for choice in Kilmartin. Ballymeanoch complex is a worthwhile visit consisting of a kerb cairn, stone row, a stone pair and a henge. It requires some time and exploration to make sense of the complex. The concentration of sites in a small area implies that Ballymeanoch was important to the ancient people.

Ballymeanoch Kerb Cairn submitted by caradoc68 on 11th Dec 2011. NR 83395 96429, Kerb cairn, Ballymean. Kilmartin Glen is a very interesting area in Argyll rich in Archaeology. This Kerb cairn in know exception, being on private land the farmer has kindly fenced it off with pubic access to severely Neolithic/Bronze age features in this field.

Log Text: Ballynaugton cairn lies in rough ground c. 0.75 miles NW of Lagavulin Distillery. The track from Lagavulin Distillery car park heading NW leads to Lagavulin Cairn, Druim Mor Standing Stone, Achnancarranan Stone Row and Ballynaughton Cairn. The remnants of the Ballynaughton Cairn arecovered in ferns but the chamber is well defined.
