Log Text: The location of Lab Knowe has been preserved for future antiquarians, however the grass mound with a modern stone marker cairn and information plaque is scant compensation for the destruction of an ancient cairn.
Le Petit Ménec

Visited: Yes on 18th Sep 2023. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 4

Le Petit Ménec submitted by ermine on 6th Aug 2004. Confusingly, Petit-Menéc is in fact at the opposite, eastern end of the alignments to le Menéc village at the western end. You need to turn left onto the D186 main road after continuing from Kerlescan. After about 250m turn right into a minor road going past a forest, there is a clearing where you can park after about 400m. The menhirs are in the forest on your right, arranged in a gentle curve. You don't get the same clear overview of the alignments since the view is obscured by the trees, bu...

Log Text: Le Petit Ménec Alignments is a full stop E of the Carnac Alignments. The stone rows wind through a small wood. There is a more intimate atmosphere in this less frequented site than in the popular massive alignments.

Log Text: I was unsure what to make of this rectangular enclosure in the Manio forest. The stones are too short for it to be used for containment. The proximity of the Geant du Manio adds to its air of mystery.

Log Text: Not for the first time, I was hypnotised by a stone circle and failed to recognise a nearby cairn. I did observe the mound from a distance but failed to investigate it. A Beginner's Error!

Log Text: Lingdowey Burn E is difficult to access across rough boggy ground SSW of Cairnerzean Farm SW Cairn. Wellies and GPS navigation are strongly recommended. The ruined cairn has a presence despite being entirely stone-robbed.

Log Text: Lingdowey Burn S Cairn is one of the Cairnerzean Fell Cairn Group on open moorland. The cairns vary in states of preservation from entirely robbed out to relatively intact. Lingdowey Burn S Cairn is similar to its neighbour, Lingdowey Burn N Cairn. It has a scatter of stones over the entire cairn however the addition of a modern cairn and shelter in the centre of the cairn have reduced its authenticity.

Lligwy Burial Chamber
Date Added: 15th Apr 2021
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Wales (Anglesey)
Visited: Yes on 28th Apr 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Access 4

Lligwy Burial Chamber submitted by Jimwithnoname on 8th Sep 2011. Amazing dolmen and very unnerving sat underneath the 25 ton capstone. It's perched on very little it seems on the one side. The warden approached us as we sat eating at the site. He asked if we were thinking of stopping the night, which we were, but as he said. that's a no no. We respected him and moved on after our picnic. He was quite pleasant and only doing his job. Many people wild camp as he said, and set fire to crops or drive through hedges!

Log Text: Lligwy Burial Chamber has one of the most impressive capstones in the British Isles. The cuboid shape is different from the slab like capstones found in Cornwall.

Log Text: Lochrutton Loch Crannog is not spectacular, however, it is an easy walk on a path to view the crannog from the E bank of the loch.
Directions: Take the Lochfoot turn off the A75 at the Drummore Roundabout c. 3 miles W of Dumfries. After c. 0.7 mile you will reach a crossroads. Continue straight onto an unsigned narrow road for c. 0.3 miles to reach a lay-by on the left. A path for Lochrutton Loch starts here, heading W along a fence. As the path heads through a dry stane dyke turn left, heading S through the field towards a wooded promontory on the loch edge. The path continues W along the promontory for c. 100 yards to the water's edge. The crannog is a small isle in the middle of the loch, populated by several small trees, SW of the promontory. My walk can be viewed on Lochrutton Loch.

Log Text: The desirability of an antiquity is proportional to the difficulty in reaching it. I seem to follow this principle in my expeditions. By that measure Stonehenge is not worth the effort but Long Tom (Cairnryan) is a must visit. This may seem like twisted logic however millions of people have visited Stonehenge and maybe 10 people have actively searched for Long Tom (Cairnryan). PS I have also visited Stonehenge.
