Avebury
Date Added: 17th Apr 2021
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 18th Aug 2009. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 5
Avebury Aerial 0507 submitted by JJ on 4th Nov 2003. Here's my theory: As you can see, the shadows cast on the western side of the circle point to the exact spot for the next stone in line. Perhaps this is why Avebury is more hexagonal in shape than round.
Based on this assumption, then it would be easy to work out the heights of the missing stones without too much difficulty. Maybe the distance between each stone along this side was calculated not by 'linear measurement' but rather set by the preceding stone and shadow cast.

Log Text: I enjoyed my visit to Avebury Circle but i have two reservations:
1) I found the scale of the circle too large to take in as a whole. It was difficult to imagine the overall plan. Subsequent views of aerial shots have given me a better impression of the monument.
2) The construction of houses and a road within the henge spoiled the antiquity of the site for me. I would have liked to have seen the circle in its original condition.
Bratton Camp
Date Added: 1st Jun 2021
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 18th Aug 2009. My rating: Condition 3 Access 3

Bratton Camp submitted by DavidCWoods on 26th Sep 2004. Also known as Bratton Camp. This is surrounded by a double earthwork wall with a deep ditch.

Log Text: The interior of Bratton Camp is rather featureless and flat. I found Westbury White Horse more interesting.

The Polisher (Fyfield Down) submitted by TheCaptain on 24th Sep 2019. At long last, I have been to visit this fabulous stone.

Log Text: There is a large flat slab with a large rock basin on its upper surface c. 50 yards E of Fyfield Down Polisher Stone. I wonder if the Rock Basin was made by the same people who made the Polisher Stone?

Log Text: I combined my visit to Mother's Jam with The Polisher, a very impressive, grooved stone used to manufacture ceremonial axes. Polisher stones are very rare, a must visit.
Overton Hill barrow cemetery
Date Added: 18th Dec 2022
Site Type: Barrow Cemetery

Visited: Yes on 8th Feb 2011. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 4

Overton Hill barrow cemetery submitted by Humbucker on 26th Dec 2017. Overton Hill Barrow Cemetery. A fantastically atmospheric place to visit, especially during the winter months when most other visitors tend to stick to Avebury or The Ridgeway itself.

Log Text: The northernmost tumulus is marked on the horizon by a crown of trees. There is a path off the Ridgeway leading directly to the barrow.
Woodhenge (Wiltshire)

Woodhenge (Wiltshire) submitted by sem on 7th Sep 2015. Woodhenge -The Model
One picture taken of a 3D model conceived during a wet weekend. Projects like this can reveal previously unseen features.
I would point out that the henge itself is now thought to have been built after the timbers decayed.

Log Text: I was disappointed with the unimaginative use of concrete posts substituted for timber posts. Not worth a visit.

Great Cursus, Stonehenge
Date Added: 5th Jul 2023
Site Type: Cursus
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 4th Jun 2023. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 3

Log Text: The Great Cursus is a polar opposite of its more famous neighbour, Stonehenge Stone Circle. The Great Cursus blends into the landscape whereas Stonehenge Stone Circle stands out on the plain. If you take the path to the circle from the visitor centre the Great Cursus is visited on the way. The west end of the cursus has an information board in a clearing of the Fargo Plantation.
Great Cursus Barrows, Stonehenge
Date Added: 5th Jul 2023
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 4th Jun 2023. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3
Great Cursus Barrows, Stonehenge submitted by TimPrevett on 18th Aug 2004. One of the most impressive bell barrows - which we thought resembled landed 'flying saucers'.

Log Text: The Great Cursus Barrows are obvious on the horizon viewed from the stone circle. It is more prominent than the nearby Great Cursus. It's a shame that the majority of visitors to Stonehenge take the bus to and from the stone circle missing out on the less spectacular barrow cemetery and cursus.

Log Text: I was travelling to Cornwall on the A303 when Stonehenge popped up on the horizon. I was magnetically drawn to revisit one of the great wonders of the world. The difference between my 2 visits, 14 years apart, was that I appreciated the surrounding barrows near Stonehenge so much more.

Bawd Stone submitted by vicky on 2nd Sep 2001. The Bawdstone, possible dolmen, near Hen Cloud, The Roaches, Staffordshire GR: SJ009620
This so called ‘dolmen’ was described by antiquarian J.D. Sainter in his book ‘Scientific Rambles Round Macclesfield’ in 1878:
"At a short distance south of Rock Hall, there may be observed on the opposite side of Hen Cloud a block of gritstone, which upon approaching it, is found to be rested or balanced, in the first place, upon a short edge of rock and then upon two upright and pointed pilla...

Log Text: The Bawd Stone is located between The Roaches and Hen Cloud. It may be a natural dolmen enhanced to locate a burial below the massive stone. The setting is certainly spectacular.
There is parking available at SK0061961882 c. 30 yards SE of the start of the path. Follow the path for c. 300 yards uphill to reach a crossroad. Turn R for c. 30 yards until a faint path veers L. Take this path E for c. 50 yards to reach the Bawd Stone.

Hautville's Quoit submitted by bec-zog on 29th Oct 2003. Hautville Quoit. Late neolithic remnant. Located @ ST 602,638 (NNE 0f Stanton Drew Great Circle)
Aligns with centre of the Great Circle & the SW Circle.
Possibly part of a larger, now destroyed, structure.

Log Text: The remaining stone of Hauteville's Quoit half-buried next to a hedge requires more imagination than I have to reconstruct the monument. One for the completists.
