Robin Hood's Stone submitted by vicky on 24th Jan 2004. A close up of Robin Hood's stone showing the weathering grooves.

Log Text: Robin Hood's Stone is the definitive example of an anachronism, a standing stone in an urban environment. The green iron railings which imprison the standing stone emphasise it's alienation.

Log Text: Bowerman's Nose is one of those splendid oddities which don't have an explanation. They are happy accidents. They don't need to be explained they just exist.

Log Text: This ruined cist is in a featureless moor with many scattered stones. Good GPS navigation is vital to locate the cist. It only becomes apparent at close range.
Hawk's Tor (South)
Date Added: 1st Jul 2023
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 10th Mar 2014. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 3

Hawk's Tor (South) submitted by SandyG on 29th Sep 2019. The Hawk's Tor (South) stone row, view from the east.

Log Text: I summited Hawk's Tor without any expectations. I was surprised to find these mysterious stones wedged into a crevice between rocks. Subsequently I discovered that this arrangement was considered to be a stone row.
Gamelands
Date Added: 20th Jul 2022
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cumbria)
Visited: Yes on 1st Mar 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Gamelands submitted by drolaf on 15th Aug 2020. View of Gamelands from just up the hill. From here you can also still see the cairns at Raisbeck.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: This ruined stone circle has a presence greater than its physical footprint. It has no typical standing stones but the N half is well delineated as is the S Arc. The location reminded me of Drummore Stone Circle near Kirkudbright however the remains of Gamelands Stone Circle are more impressive.
Avening burial chambers
Date Added: 17th Apr 2021
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 11th Jan 2014. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 3
Avening burial chambers submitted by theCaptain on 20th Apr 2010. The entrance stones of the SE chamber.
No remains of the supposed porthole entrance can be seen, its now buried below ground level after the hillslide.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: The burial chambers have been artfully placed in the rectory garden in Avening, however, in principle I do not agree with people removing parts of an ancient monument for their own gratification. The original site is devalued and the new site is questionable at best.
Aspers Field
Date Added: 16th Apr 2021
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Cumbria)
Visited: Yes on 28th Dec 2013. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3
Aspers Field submitted by baz on 26th Apr 2003. This stone (at NY558152) lies in the next field to the more well known Goggleby Stone (NY559151), from which I took this picture (with zoom). Both of these stones form a part of the Shap Stone Avenue.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: I have mixed feelings about the Shap stones. I am grateful for the stones that have been preserved but I regret that Shap Avenue has been effectively dismantled. I would love to have seen the avenue as it was meant to have been seen.
Achara Standing Stone
Date Added: 3rd Apr 2021
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)

Achara Standing Stone submitted by caradoc68 on 19th Jan 2012. NM 9866 5455, Achara Standing Stone. Not far from the road but can be quite difficult to see. This stone stands alone in a field and is a joy to see, has it is just over 12 feet in hight you feel quite dwarfed standing next to this huge stone.

Log Text: Acharra Standing Stone stands in a field on the SW edge of Duror.
King Arthur Stone
Date Added: 3rd Feb 2023

King Arthur Stone submitted by Maeg on 27th Aug 2012. A view of the 6th century inscribed stone at Slaughterbridge, as seen from the adjacent footpath. The script is both latin and ogham and reads "Latini [h]ic iacit fili Macari" = Latinus son of Macarus lies here. Latinus is thought to have been a local celtic chief (according to Wikipedia at least).

Log Text: King Arthur Stone lies prone on the W bank of the Camel River at SX 10916 85690. I accessed the stone from a path within the The Vale of Avalon Visitor Centre near Camelford.

Prior's Cross submitted by Thorgrim on 5th Nov 2004. Unusual Fleur de Lys symbols on both sides of this cross at the strangely named village of Washaway

Boskednan A
Date Added: 30th May 2021
Site Type: Cairn
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 15th Oct 2013. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 3

Boskednan A submitted by AngieLake on 15th Oct 2004. This view of the 'destroyed barrow'/cairn near Carn Galva, shows its alignment with Ding Dong mine on the horizon. Boskednan circle is on slightly lower ground not far from here, and on an alignment between the 'barrow'/cairn and the
mine building. The flat sides of the pointed stones face north/south. (This pic was taken at 4pm in March 2004).
The stones sit on a higher ridge at 227m.

Log Text: Boskednan A Kerbed Cairn is easily visited on the way to Nine Maidens of Boskednan. There are intermittent kerb stones round the cairn up to 4 feet tall. As a starter before the Nine Stones of Boskednan it is very satisfying.
Boskednan stone circle
Date Added: 14th Dec 2022
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 15th Oct 2013. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 2

Boskednan stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The portal stones illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun. The tallest one (on the left) has a diagonal groove present on this and the opposite side. The holes that the restored stones were raised from have been covered with pegged down foliage, presumably to encourage regrowth on the bare earth.

Log Text: Boskednan stone circle's isolated location and the impressive height of the stones amplify the gravitas of this monument.
Pennance Entrance Grave
Date Added: 23rd Dec 2022
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 15th Oct 2013. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 5 Access 3

Pennance Entrance Grave submitted by enkidu41 on 9th Mar 2004. A neolithic Scillonian entrance grave 8m long by 2m high. The SE-facing burial chamber is 4m long x 1.4m wide and is roofed by 5 slabs.

Log Text: The main difficulty in visiting Pennance Entrance Grave is finding somewhere to park. The monument has been thoughtlessly ruined by modern farming, yet it retains some ancient ambiance.

Watch Croft Cairns submitted by Bladup on 6th Mar 2015. Watch Croft Cairns, this cairn is built against outcrop and has a massive kerb. The cairn is found at SW419355.

Log Text: The cairn on the summit of Watch Croft has been despoiled by the construction of a modern shelter and a trig point supplanted in the centre of it.
Boslow Cross
Date Added: 29th May 2021
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 14th Oct 2013. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Boslow Cross submitted by JimChampion on 24th Oct 2007. August 2007. The southern side of the Boslow Cross, alongside a grassy path.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Boslow Cross has the appearance of a dressed stone rather than a standing stone. I would err on the side of it being a parish boundary stone rather than a prehistoric stone.
