Lagwine submitted by markj99 on 27th Jul 2024. E-W Axis of Lagwine Cairn viewed from E.

Log Text: Lagwine Cairn is a well preserved stony cairn given its proximity to civilisation. A stone ridge measuring c. 50 ft E-W, 30 feet N-S and 4 feet high has been preserved in rough pasture. On my first visit the knoll was occupied by beef cattle and calves, a dangerous proposition. I opted to revisit at a later date. Fortunately the livestock were in an adjacent field so I was able to survey the cairn at my leisure.

Log Text: I appreciate that this ruined cairn is not worth a visit in itself but if you are visiting other sites in the area it may merit a short detour. I have included detailed instructions for travel from north and south on the main page.
Twelve Apostles (Dumfries)
Date Added: 22nd Sep 2024
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway)
Visited: Yes on 28th Aug 2021. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Twelve Apostles (Dumfries) submitted by Greengirl on 3rd Feb 2020. The complete circle taken from the east end of the field. It's such a large circle that it is difficult to fit it all in one photo!
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: The scale of the Twelve Apostles Stone Circle is impressive. There are however obvious gaps in the circle and an assortment of stones which diminishes its gravitas. That said, it is obviously worth a small detour if you are passing through Dumfries.

Log Text: It took detailed planning and cost me a lot of energy to find this cairn, literally in the middle of nowhere. However seeing the mound rising above the chaos of tree debris made it all worthwhile.
Fell of Loch Ronald
Date Added: 8th Oct 2024
Site Type: Cairn

Fell of Loch Ronald submitted by markj99 on 7th Oct 2024. Fell of Loch Ronald Cairn viewed from E.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Fell of Loch Ronald Cairn is not easy to find but the route to it is a wide track until the last 200 yards on rough terrain. The cairn has been badly mauled by forest ploughing however an excavated cist with six large stones has survived. GPS navigation is essential to locate the hidden cist.

No unauthorised vehicles are allowed within the wind farm but you are allowed to walk or cycle. The route is easy walking except for the last 200 yards through rough moorland. See main page for directions to the cairn.

Culquhasen-SE

Culquhasen-SE submitted by markj99 on 11th Oct 2024. Culquhasen SE Cairn viewed from S.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: The walk to Culquhasen SE Cairn is not straightforward. This route involves a walk of 0.25 miles along the A747 Port William road. Care should be taken: cars tend to drive fast around a sharp corner. The cross country route is an assault course: It includes crossing 3 dry stane dykes and a burn but no electric fences fortunately. Wellies are essential for this walk due to the burn crossing. My route is viewable on Culquhasen SE.
St Mary's Well (Kilmorie Chapel)
Date Added: 22nd Oct 2024

St Mary's Well (Kilmorie Chapel) submitted by markj99 on 22nd Oct 2024. St Mary's Well viewed from S.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: St Mary's Well is easy to visit but it has been enclosed by a modern concrete pipe. It is barely worth the effort to locate it. There is no sign of a stone slab at the well.
Kirkcolm Cross
Date Added: 23rd Oct 2024
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway)
Visited: Yes on 20th Oct 2024. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Kirkcolm Cross submitted by Anne T on 27th Jun 2019. The top panel of Face A of the Kirkholm Cross. Dr Craig describes it as "an ornate hammer-headed cross ... bordered by a roll moulding and filled with scroll work, with a sunken roundel at the centre". The cross stands 1.70m tall.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Turn onto Church Road off Main Street in Kirkcolm. Kirkcolm New Church is c. 200 yards up the hill. The cross is on the east side of the church. There are intricate carvings on the NW and SE faces.

St Columba's Well (Kirkcolm) submitted by HeikeHR on 23rd Sep 2024. St. Columba's Well, Kirkcolm
Seems to be totally restored. Looks new, but still very nice
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: St Columba's Well is in Corsewall Estate in Kirkcolm. The domed stone structure covering the well looks very modern but it is only a 250 yard stroll from the car park in the centre of Kirkcolm.
Low Airyolland
Date Added: 28th Oct 2024
Site Type: Cairn
Country: Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway)

Low Airyolland submitted by markj99 on 27th Oct 2024. Low Airyolland Cairn viewed from N.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Low Airyolland Cairn is easily visited by following the Southern Upland Way S of Cruise Farm. The biggest problem is parking: It is not possible to park at Cruise Farm and the grass verge opposite the gate is soft. I chose to park at the first available lay-by c. 0.25 miles S of the gate.
Drumwhirn Cairn
Date Added: 13th Feb 2025

Claughreid
Date Added: 7th Jan 2025
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway)
Visited: Yes on 26th Dec 2024. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 1

Claughreid submitted by stu on 17th Jul 2004. NX517560.
Similar to the Glenquickan circle just over the hill, here though the centre stone has fallen.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Claughreid Stone Circle is difficult to locate due to its remote location over difficult ground. I was unwilling to trudge through boggy moorland so I devised an easier route via a track to Claughreid Farm: Turn off the A75 for Cairn Holy at NX 5164 5305. Follow the sign for Cairn Holy for c. 100 yards then bear right onto an unsigned single track road. Stay on this winding lane for c. 0.4 miles to reach an unsigned track on the left at NX 5207 5313. Follow this dead-end track for a mile to reach a small car park at the end: the track becomes increasingly rough and dirty closer to the end.
The walking route to Claughreid Stone Circle starts at the end of the public road from Barholm Farm to Claughreid Farm. Park up and walk along the track to Claughreid Farm. Head W through Claughreid Farm then head downhill. Cross over a ford then follow the track through a dry stane dyke. Continue NW for c. 300 yards to go through a gate in the dry stane dyke. Head NNE from the gateway on vague tracks for c. 100 yards to reach Claughreid Stone Circle, partially obscured in moorland. My walking route along this track can be viewed on Claughreid Stone Circle.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Auchmantle Fell (The Wee Cairn) is the more difficult to locate cairn of the pair of ruined cairns on Auchmantle Fell . If you visit The Muckle Cairn first then head S for c. 135 yards across boggy moorland look out for a grassy circle in the moor with a prominent earth bank c. 1.5 feet high on the NW arc. See directions on Auchmantle Fell (The Muckle Cairn) main page.

Ballach-a-Heathry

Ballach-a-Heathry submitted by markj99 on 25th Mar 2020. Field clearance stones on Ballach-a-Heathry cairn.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: When I revisited Ballach-a-Heathry Cairn it's condition was much improved. The large field clearance stones had been removed, leaving a grassy plateau sloping S-N. The perimeter of the cairn was more sharply defined with steep edges. The cairn has an irregular elongated oval footprint. It is situated c. 180 yards SW of a convenient gate with adjacent parking space.
