Gurness submitted by PAB on 11th Jan 2021. 4.45am, the beautiful glow lighting up the stones. Worth getting up for such an experience, only an hour's sleep lost, and so much gained!

Log Text: In most cases Antiquarians have to mentally reconstruct sites from several stones or grassy mounds. Gurness settlement is at the opposite end of the spectrum. There are multiple layers of occupancy preserved in an extensive network of stone walls representing exterior and interior features.

Log Text: Head for Fortingall. Cross the Lyon Bridge c. 0.5 miles W of Fortingall. There is a large passing place c. 300 yards later on the R with room to park up. Walk back c. 100 yards to a gateway. Walk c. 200 yards ESE across the field to see Lyon Bridge Cairn, a small dimple in a flat field. The recumbent stone on the NE edge of the cairn has multiple cup marks. It looks out of place on a small ring cairn. Its original purpose is uncertain.

Visited: Yes on 23rd Jan 2009. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 4

The Bridestones (Todmorden) submitted by markj99 on 2nd Jun 2021. The Bride Stone tapers to a narrow column at its base (c. 1m walking stick for scale).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: There is a large lay-by at SD 93769 26809 on Eastwood Road from Todmordern. A path starts here leading to the Bridestones after c. 500 yards on a muddy path (stout footwear recommended). The Bridestones are far enough away from the road to give the unusual weathered stones an isolated special ambiance. The Bride Stone herself is the star attraction, the Groom Stone lies broken by her side.

Bratton Camp submitted by DavidCWoods on 26th Sep 2004. Also known as Bratton Camp. This is surrounded by a double earthwork wall with a deep ditch.

Log Text: The interior of Bratton Camp is rather featureless and flat. I found Westbury White Horse more interesting.
Boskenna Cross
Date Added: 30th May 2021
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 20th Mar 2013. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 5

Boskenna Cross submitted by enkidu41 on 15th Nov 2004. The shot shows the principal face of the cross with its depiction of Christ.
The three-part base is out of all proportion to the cross. The look of stability is deceptive given its three damaging brushed with modern traffic!

Log Text: I parked in the lay-by adjacent to Boskenna Cross for the path to Boscawen-Ros E.

Date Added: 30th May 2021

Country: England (Cornwall)

Boskednan A submitted by AngieLake on 15th Oct 2004. This view of the 'destroyed barrow'/cairn near Carn Galva, shows its alignment with Ding Dong mine on the horizon. Boskednan circle is on slightly lower ground not far from here, and on an alignment between the 'barrow'/cairn and the
mine building. The flat sides of the pointed stones face north/south. (This pic was taken at 4pm in March 2004).
The stones sit on a higher ridge at 227m.

Log Text: Boskednan A Kerbed Cairn is easily visited on the way to Nine Maidens of Boskednan. There are intermittent kerb stones round the cairn up to 4 feet tall. As a starter before the Nine Stones of Boskednan it is very satisfying.

Log Text: I can never resist a standing stone on the horizon as I am driving. I will either investigate there and then or make a mental note to search for the stone later. In this case I was able to park up c. 500 yards NW of the stone at SW 3961 3310, adjacent to a track which led to Boswens Menhir. It is not a spectacular standing stone, however a 15 minute walk while driving is good exercise.

Bosporthennis Quoit submitted by ocifant on 13th Mar 2004. Bosporthennis (pronounced Bosprennis) Quoit
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Bosporthennis Quoit is one of the more unusual quoits, sat on a small mound. There is a large open chamber on top of the mound. A capstone on the quoit has been carved into a millstone but left in situ.
Boslow Cross
Date Added: 29th May 2021
Site Type: Ancient Cross

Boslow Cross submitted by JimChampion on 24th Oct 2007. August 2007. The southern side of the Boslow Cross, alongside a grassy path.

Log Text: Boslow Cross has the appearance of a dressed stone rather than a standing stone. I would err on the side of it being a parish boundary stone rather than a prehistoric stone.
Boscawen-Ros East
Date Added: 29th May 2021
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 8th Feb 2019. My rating: Condition 3 Access 4

Boscawen-Ros East submitted by enkidu41 on 3rd Mar 2004. A 2.6m square-sectioned stone, one of a pair. Its smaller partner was knocked down early in 20th century.
SW 4281 2394
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Boscawen-Ros East is easily visited from the lay-by at Boskenna Cross. I followed the right of way path and found the large menhir in the middle of some cabbages. I skirted round the field to find the other menhir incorporated into the hedge at SW42782393. I was convinced that the hedge was built round this standing stone. The second stone is around 100 yards W of the visible stone. There is an interesting capstone shaped stone at SW42872395 on the eastern edge of the field, around 150 yards E of the visible menhir.
