Göbekli Tepe

Göbekli Tepe submitted by AlexHunger on 1st Aug 2006. Segment D is one of the near circular shaped pillared areas in the best condition of Göbekli Tepe. There are 5 more, usually smaller such pillared areas on this site, many of the pillars having elaborate carvings. Göbekli Tepe is apparently a Pre Pottery Neolithic Temple dating back to about 9,000 BCE near the Euphrates in South Eastern Turkey. Farley Mount

Farley Mount submitted by JimChampion on 29th May 2005. May 2005. The mound and obelisk from the southwest. Not all sources agree as to whether this mound was originally a round barrow or not. There are many other round barrows in the surrounding area, but if this was a barrow it must have been made much more prominent when it was turned into the grave for a lucky 18th century horse: it currently has a Silbury-esque gradient.

Log Text: The stones are easily accessed with two standing in a field still in use and the third just across the road. The close alignment is clearly visible. Worth the visit.

Cusco - Qorikancha

Cusco - Qorikancha submitted by davidmorgan on 7th Jan 2011. The remains of the Inca Temple of the Sun lie beneath the Cathedral of Santo Domingo.

Log Text: Cusco consists of buildings and structures that are a mixture of modern, Colonial, and Inca. The most impressive example for me was the Inca "Koricancha" parts of which can still be seen in, around, and under the church and convent of Santo Domingo. The remains of Inca temple are a great opportunity to appreciate some the details of their superb masonry skills. There are many indications of the solar alignments that would be expected in a temple to honour the Sun God. Well worth a visit.

Charles De Gaulle Obelisk

Charles De Gaulle Obelisk submitted by martinjeley on 10th Nov 2014. The view of the reverse side of the Obelisk is in contrast to the smooth sides presented to the street. It reminds of the masonic symbolism of the rough stone yet to shaped.

Log Text: Although I had visited the Lake District many times over the years this was my first visit to this incredible stone circle. The stone circle in itself is well maintained. Once on site the special location with the surrounding circle of mountain peaks make it easy to understand why this location was chosen.

Carcassonne - La Cité

Carcassonne - La Cité submitted by thecaptain on 19th Feb 2005. La Cité de Carcassonne, seen here from the south. Ancient citadel which goes back as far as time. Although the main remains of this fantastic fairy story city are now mediaeval much of the walls can be seen to date back to Visigoth and Roman times. This is of course, all built upon a citadel which was here long before any of them came here.

Log Text: Carcassonne is an impressive fortress with many interesting areas to visit. The history of the region is reflected in many places, including the Abbey. My time there was limited and I would go back to see more if the opportunity were to arise.

Log Text: The integration of the village into the superb stone circle is in part a distraction and yet a wonder in itself. The site is impressive both on its own and as a part of the many sites in this area of Wiltshire.

The ability to walk through the stones and experience the location gives it some advantages over Stonehenge.

America's Stonehenge

America's Stonehenge submitted by thecaptain on 14th Dec 2003. The sacrificial table at Mystery Hill, also known as America's Stonehenge, near Salem, New Hampshire. Is it an ancient site or a fairly modern construction ? They say its over 4000 years old, but who built it ? When I visited 10 to 15 years ago it was a really horrible wet day, so I didnt get many pictures. And I have to say, that despite their best efforts to assure me that carbon dating of objects prove it to be 4000 years old, the stones just didnt look weathered enough to me.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Understanding that this Stonehenge was unlikely to have the grandeur of the more famous cousin in Wiltshire, England we chose to arrange a visit anyway. The remaining building structures and stones clearly show a long history and knowledge of significant solar events during the year. The fact that much of the site is tree covered makes it harder to appreciate the setting the context of the surrounding landscape. It was worth the visit.
